Overview
This unit covers planning and management of long-term weed, pest and disease control in crops, including the principles and practices of crop protection in a crop management system. You will identify the standard required to interpret information, implement and monitor control procedures and strategies, evaluate and record control strategies and plan land use according to control strategies. You will have access to real crop production systems to develop underpinning knowledge and practices.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Written Assessment
You are required to write a report by selecting one pest, one disease and one weed of economical importance in a selected crop or crops. You are required to provide with the scientific and common names of the pest, disease and weed, identify and describe the main symptoms of the pest, disease and weed in the selected crop, describe the biological cycle of the pest, disease and weed and its relationship with the crop (e.g. damage, susceptibility), provide with data related with the importance of the disease in relation to its geographical distribution, climate or weather variables that favour the spread of the disease. Maximum total word limit is 2000 words. The report should include an introduction, main body of your report containing the points above and a summary or conclusion.

2 Written Assessment
Integrated Pest Management Plan.
In this assessment you will develop an Integrated Pest Management Plan for a selected cropping systems with the aim of ensuring a profitable crop. The written assessment will include the identification of weeds, vertebrate and invertebrate pests and diseases that affect the cropping system selected, provide with economical data that describes the importance of the disease, pest and weed for the selected crop. You will evaluate the practical and financial viability of your plan, its environmental sustainability and possible impacts on other farm enterprises. Maximum total word limit is 3000 words. The report should include an introduction, main body of your report containing the points above and a summary or conclusion.
