General Information

Overview

This unit will provide students the opportunity to consolidate and apply all of the accident investigation and analysis theory studied in the Accident Forensics course to a real accident scenario. Learners will take a leadership role in planning and conducting a detailed accident investigation. Post investigation the learner will be required to analyse the accident causation sequences and linkages by applying an event tree or equivalent method.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Task Description

For each task, you must post an answer which reflects your thoughts based on your readings and learnings in the Bachelor of Accident Forensics to date (remember your referencing when required!).  You will be then required to provide constructive and supportive feedback to one of your peers.

In this assessment task, your lecturer will set tasks exploring key topics. These tasks will help you to prepare for preparing the report including starting the analysis of your scenario. You must pass all four tasks in order to pass this assessment item. These tasks may include:

  • Undertaking a practical task and submitting
  • Presenting an argument on a topic provided
  • Conducting some research and presenting a finding.

In your career, you will find yourself discussing points of view and you need to be able to argue your position effectively. These tasks will give you practice in this skill and also get you thinking about your learning in the Bachelor of Accident Forensics course to date.

More details about this assessment and the tasks themselves will be posted on the Moodle site throughout the term.

2 Practical and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
SCENE2GO exercise

Task Description

You will be provided with a SCENE2GO file from which to observe an accident scene. A SCENE2GO application is a form of visualising and interacting with a registered 3D laser scanned project with attached photos, videos, imagery, PDF files and more, known as annotations. The SCENE2GO file is simple to operate and requires a basic low-end computer system. Note that this is the most basic form of being able to view a 3D laser scanned project with the ability to take accurate measurements and is almost indestructible.

You are required to view the accident scene and undertake 2 tasks.


Task 1: (20%)

You will be given a set of specific questions (Activity assessment document) to answer about your SCENE2GO Scene. This part of the assignment requires you answer those questions relating to the accident scene. 


Task 2: (30%)

You will:

  • Undertake a risk assessment for the task of undertaking an investigation of the scene in person. Risk assessment proforma will be provided in Moodle.
  • Describe your actions on arriving at the site, as well as the activities you would undertake. These actions and activities require descriptive explanations. 
  • Detail what post-scene visit evidence you would request and/or gather.
  • Develop a witness interview plan suitable for advance statement taking for the driver of the vehicle.

To pass this assessment, students must be graded Pass in all 5 core skills, which are scene management, photography, mapping, witness interviewing and professionalism whilst at the residential school. Students must pass this assessment to pass this unit.

Task 1 (20%)

Assessment will be based on the answers provided in the Activity assessment document. Marks allocated are indicated on the document.

Task 2 (30%)

Marks are allocated for the following activities

3 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Preliminary Report & Reflection

Task Description

The work carried out in this assessment will form the basis for the final project in AINV13006 - Crash Lab Project 2. The standard of work undertaken in this assessment will directly affect the quality of your work in AINV13006.

Submission shall be one file for each of the Parts A, B & C. Files must be in .docx or .pdf format.


PART A (40%) - Preliminary report

This preliminary report is based on the evidence you collected in AINV12001 residential school when designated as Team Leader

For this assessment task you must:

  • Obtain copies of all the relevant physical and documentary evidence, photographs, logs, interview statements etc collected by the members of your investigation team as part of the investigation in which you were team leader.
  • Undertake analysis of the accident and prepare a preliminary event tree.
  • Participate in tutorials to ensure that you and your peers have a greater understanding of the relevant investigation and lines of enquiry.
  • Prepare a preliminary analysis, including a narrative of causation which aligns with the causation logic of your event tree.
  • Present material in a preliminary report format


Assessment

The grade for this Assessment task accounts for 40% of the total assessment for this course.

Note: This exercise and preliminary report forms basis for your final report in AINV13006 - Crash Lab Project 2.

Your submission for the preliminary report will include the following materials collected to date:

  • Executive Summary pertaining the accident you were managing
  • Table of contents
  • Background of accident you were managing

  • Discussion of lines of enquiry (including those eliminated)

PART B (Pass/Fail) - Presentation

You are required to prepare and deliver a 15 minute online presentation, supported by Powerpoint that describes your investigation, your preliminary analysis, including your preliminary logic diagrams.


PART C (10%) - Reflection

You will be required to reflect on your preparedness for professional practice. For Part C of this assessment task, you are required to:

  • Reflect on your learning in the Bachelor of Accident Forensics course to date.
  • Complete a self assessment of your Part A report (using criteria provided by your lecturer).
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses in relation to each of the crash lab activities (eg evidence collection, logic diagrams etc).
  • Explain how you will address any shortcomings prior to your industry placement.

You are free to present this Part C of the assessment in the format of your choice.
