General Information

Overview

This introductory unit is designed to equip emerging Health professionals with essential research and study skills. In this unit you will identify the strengths and weaknesses of research designs and methodologies, and learn how to critically evaluate information from a variety of sources. You will also conduct a systematic information search of health-related literature, use bibliographic software, enhance your academic writing skills and select, analyse and interpret statistics.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Assessment Title
Online Content Quizzes

Task Description

Content covered throughout the semester will be assessed in a series of online content quizzes. There will be 3 online content quizzes in total.

Each quiz will consist of 30 multiple choice or true/false questions, and will be open to students for a duration of 7 days, as outlined below:

  1. Online Content Quiz 1 - Opens Monday Week 5 (8 April 2019) 9am AEST, closes Monday Break Week (15 April 2019) 9am AEST
  2. Online Content Quiz 2 - Opens Monday Week 9 (13 May 2019) 9am AEST, closes Monday Week 10 (20 May 2019) 9am AEST
  3. Online Content Quiz 3 - Opens Monday Week 12 (3 June 2019) 9am AEST, closes Monday Exam Review Week (10 June 2019) 9am AEST

The total scores from each of the 3 online content quizzes will be tallied to determine the overall mark out of 90. The total score will then be converted to a % score out of a maximum 20%.

3 Online Test

Assessment Title
Online Statistical Analysis Quiz

Task Description

This online statistical analysis quiz will test your knowledge, understanding and operational ability of basic statistical analysis skills.

Students will be required to identify the appropriate statistical analysis test, perform the analysis and interpret the results of 4 datasets. Students will then be required to use their results to answer 40 multiple choice or true/false questions.

This quiz will be open to students for a duration of 7 days. It will open Monday Week 11 (27 May 2019) at 9am AEST, and close Monday Week 12 (3 June 2019) at 9am AEST
