Unit Profile Correction added on 20-09-21

This amendment replaces the invigilated exam with an online test. There are no changes to the assessment weightings, minimum marks or learning outcomes.

The online test will be held at the same time and date as the previously scheduled exam in the exam timetable for T2/2021.

General Information

Overview

This unit will provide you with basic aeronautical knowledge of small general aviation aircraft. You will calculate basic take-off and landing performance and weight and balance information. Other factors that affect flying such as local weather, will be examined. You will develop knowledge of aerodynamics and aircraft power plants and systems. In this unit, you will cover the aeronautical knowledge requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Syllabus applicable to the Recreational Pilot Licence. This will allow you to sit the Recreational Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) Examination which is a prerequisite for attempting the flight test for the Recreational Pilot Licence.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Recommendation

Tutorials and quizzes to include CASA exam type questions. David has included CASA exam type questions in the tutorials. However, with the changes made in the CASA RPL exam, there needs to be more questions around Meteorology and Navigation.

Assessment Title
Written Assessment. Weight/balance/takeoff and landing performance.

Task Description

This assessment checks your understanding of the Weight/balance/performance topic covered in the lectures. You will use the CASA workbook information to answer questions about the Alpha Bravo and Charlie loading systems. It will be available from the Moodle after the first lecture on this topic during Week 10. It is to be uploaded to the Moodle by the due date. There is a detailed answer sheet for you to fill out by hand. This will be scanned/photographed and uploaded as your assignment submission.

After the lecture each week an online ten question quiz will become available for you to complete. The quiz will close at 11pm six days later.  There is a time limit after starting the quiz, after which the quiz will auto submit. There can only be one attempt at each quiz.
