General Information

Overview

The Principles and Practice of Aviation Law and Policy introduces an overview of the regulatory structure of civil aviation and the legal system within which this regulatory system operates and the powers, responsibilities and scope of the various aviation regulatory authorities at the national and international level. You will develop a sound comprehension of the regulatory framework applicable to the airline industry from both a public and private international law perspective and gain an overview of the major international legal instruments and roles of institutional players in domestic, regional and international aviation regulation. The unit equips aviation professionals and managers with some of the basic legal knowledge required to operate in the aviation industry.

Online Discussion Forum

Task Description

There will be 3 online discussion forums throughout the term contributing 30% to the final assessment. They will be undertaken online and be due at approximately four-week intervals as given on the Moodle site. The online-discussion forum will focus on information technology competence and information literacy, where students need to use the unit content as well as a moderate amount of information to discuss and debate the relevant topics. Students are required to post an article related to the topic and give comments on their own article and other students' articles in the online discussion forum.

Task: The online-discussion forum will focus on information technology competence and information literacy, where students need to use the unit content as well as a moderate amount of information to discuss and debate the relevant topics. Students are required to post an article related to the topic and give comments on their own article and other students' articles in the online discussion forum.

Criteria: Successful discussion and analysis essentially refer to the information and content that you include in your post; in many ways this is the story or narrative that you develop from start to finish. Analysis basically asks and answers the question “why”? Why is this information important in addressing the topic? Analysis helps to strengthen arguments by building a strong case – often it is achieved by acknowledging key differing arguments, but then developing a strong argument or angle for an assignment in the process – like a spine with attached and acknowledged counter arguments along the way. Comparing and contrasting are typically used to conduct analysis, with words like however, in contrast, similarly, likewise, but (and so forth) used throughout to link and generate ideas, concepts, viewpoints and arguments.

Task Description

The essay assessment contributing 40% to the final assessment and asks students to demonstrate a point of view supported by evidence. It allows students to demonstrate what they've learned and build their writing skills.

Assessment Due Date

During the examination period and will be reaffirmed in the Lectures

Return Date to Students

Two weeks after submission

Weighting

Assessment Criteria

Word Count: 3,000 words (+/- 10%)

Course Value: 40%

Essay Task: Each student will be responsible for submitting an essay (3,000 words) of selected topic. Students will have to take care to edit the final document to ensure that it has consistent voice, grammar, and writing style. The essay should be submitted through Moodle by 5:00PM on Friday, 21st of October 2022.

Basic Structure: This academic essay must contain a Title Page, List of Abbreviations/Acronyms, List of Tables & Figures, Table of Contents, Executive Summary, Introduction, Main Body, and Conclusion. The essay should be thoroughly referenced using in-text references (APA referencing is advised and preferred).

Referencing: A List of References should be provided on a separate page, and containing all sources used in the essay.

Criteria: Successful essay refers to requirements of 1. Discussion & Analysis, 2. Specifications and 3, Professional Standards ( see Moodle for details)

Notes:

1. Discussion essentially refers to the information and content that you include in your essay; in many ways this is the story or narrative that you develop from start to finish.

2. Specifications covers the selection of a chosen topic (i.e. approved by course lecturer). Referencing in-text, and the associated list of references, are also included here.

3. Design includes the essay’s structure (i.e. Executive Summary, Introduction, Main Body & Conclusion, etc.); Layout refers to page margins, page numbering, header and/or footer, title page, referencing formatted correctly and the list of references/reference list on a separate page; and, Readability covers the expected professional writing standards (as opposed to casual writing).

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
