Unit Profile Correction added on 13-09-21

Currently, this unit has the following two assessment components:

(a) 10 online quizzes = (40%) , hurdle 50% pass rate

(b) Invigilated Exam = (60%), hurdle 50% pass rate

This amendment replaces the invigilated exam (60%) with an online test (60%).

The online test will be held at the same time and date as the previously scheduled exam in the exam timetable for T2/2021.

General Information

Overview

Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures will provide you with the knowledge of instrument flight rules and procedures that are required for the issue of the Command Instrument Rating (CIR). You will cover the aeronautical knowledge requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's Instrument Rating syllabus. You will study the operational knowledge required of a Command Instrument Rating and the meteorological conditions which categorise Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). You will also study small commercial aircraft Instrument Flight Rules flight planning including the use of space and ground-based instrument systems. You will also learn the principles of performance-based navigation including area navigation and required navigation performance.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Prerequisites: AVAT12009 Navigation (Commercial Pilot Licence), AVAT12008 Meteorology (Commercial Pilot Licence) and AVAT11006 Aviation Law

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

The lectures and tutorials need to be on separate days if possible for students to have time to absorb the knowledge given in the lecture.

Recommendation

This request will be implemented subject to timetabling availability. If not possible, tutorials will be decelerated by a week and taken out of sync to allow enough study time for the lecture content.

Feedback

The support and teaching quality is very good and the demonstrated knowledge in the subject by the lecturer is very high. Questions about the content and beyond are answered in a very timely manner. The offered quizzes throughout the term are a helpful study tool.

These practises will be continued.

Feedback from UC observation

Feedback

Student attendance in lectures and tutorials was minimal during the term. Only 4 out of 37 students showed up regularly for lectures and tutorials. Given the complexity of the content, this has resulted in poor student outcomes.

Recommendation

The necessity of student attendance during lectures will be emphasised during the beginning of the term. Exercises will be added to further effectuate student collaborations with the necessity of student attendance for lectures and tutorials. Further, tutorials will not be recorded any more in order to increase student participation.
