General Information

Overview

This unit will give you the opportunity to examine and apply the National Construction Code (NCC) and associated legislation to Building Class 1 and 10 projects (residential). You will learn about statutory controls and assessment; enforcement proceedings; how occupational health and safety, environmental and heritage legislation interact with the NCC; and the application of the principles of performance-based legislation. Students who have successfully completed BLAR12034 should not enrol in this unit.

There are no requisites for this unit.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Task Description

Written assessment

This assessment task will assess your knowledge of unit learning outcomes 1 and 2. Authoring a written assignment of 2000 words, you will be required to research and interpret current developments in the construction industry, with an emphasis upon Volume 2 of the performance based National Construction Code (NCC).

As with all assessments, formatting and presentation is really important, technical accuracy and referencing where required is paramount with an overarching requirement for demonstrating your answer / submission / design with clarity.

Details in relation to the length of this assignment will be found on the Moodle home site following the commencement of the term. Submissions exceeding the word limit by greater than 10% will not be assessed beyond the prescribed word limit.

Your assessment should be produced in electronic format either as

  • a single word-processed document, or
  • a single pdf format document.

All submissions must be submitted through the assessment link in Moodle, by uploading your file following the on-screen instructions.

Task Description

Online forum

This assessment task will assess your knowledge of unit learning outcome 5. A satisfactory response to the assessment forum question is a compulsory component of this unit as it supplements the other assessments and learning outcomes that you are required to complete as part of this unit. You will need to show appropriate use of procedures, discussion and evaluation in your answers, with your answer succinctly answering the question within the required 200 word limit. This component of the unit assessment tasks comprises one (1) of five (5) individual forum posts that you will required to answer over the course of the term. For successful completion of this unit you must provide a satisfactory response to each forum question posed by the unit lecturer. As with all assessments, formatting and presentation is really important, technical accuracy and referencing where required is paramount with an overarching requirement for demonstrating your answer / submission / design with clarity. All submissions should be submitted through the assessment forum link on the Moodle home page, by uploading your file following the on-screen instructions. You must ensure that all of the work is your own, in line with University requirements. Note: you will find further support material for this assessment on the Moodle site for this unit.
