General Information

Overview

This unit will introduce you to the procedures, principles and methods of construction used for commercial projects up to multistory buildings and designated by the National Construction Code (NCC) as being within Building Class 2 to 9. You should have completed an introductory construction unit to ensure adequate level of entry knowledge. Students who have successfully completed BLAR11048 should not enrol in this unit.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Pre-requisite: BLAR11050 Residential Construction or BLCN11033 Construction 1.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Task Description

This assessment item relates to the stated unit learning outcomes 1, 3 and 4; with associated implications for learning outcome 3.
Assessment 1 will require you to show understanding of understanding of the BCA/NCC Volume 1 and key aspects related to compliant building works (Q1 & Q2).
A case study is provided (Q3) in which you are to demonstrate application of BCA/NCC Volume 1 to address matters of building classification, changes to building elements, fire controls and access and egress.

Task Description

This assessment item relates to the stated unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Assessment 2 will require you to research and answer a number of questions that explore important construction principles and concepts related to Class 2 to 9 buildings as defined by the Building Code of Australia (National Construction Code).
This is achieved by student selection of a real life case study and investigating its procurement, design and construction.

The quiz will run for 60 minutes and will cover all topics and unit content

The quiz will have 20 multiple choice questions.
