Overview
This unit will focus on developing skill required for successful project briefing and design phase development. It will require the establishment of a project brief and a demonstrated understanding of activities required as a part of the design phase of a project. Determining client needs; Establishing the project brief; Developing tools for developing and communication options throughout design phase of a project; Coordination and involvement in the design team; Developing communications mechanisms for design phases; Developing and maintaining a continuous learning strategy for practice as a design professional.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Prerequisite: BLAR13037 Building Design 2
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Written Assessment
Assessment 1 addresses learning outcomes no.1 and no.2 with implications for the learning outcome no.3. It supports you in developing generic skills related to learning outcomes no.4 to no.6. For this assessment item, you will develop a Client and Project Brief for a residential aged care building. You will be required to examine the issues and requirements regarded as important to the design process and identify the client’s responses to them. Upon selection of a proper site for your building, you will prepare a project brief for the design of the building. You will undertake a site analysis and gather all the information required as identified in the study guide as part of the brief development process. You will develop schematic diagrams and generate preliminary site and floor plans. Assessment 1 includes two parts; A and B. Part A is the report and schematic drawings to be submitted in Week 6 of the term via Assessment portal on the Moodle page of the unit. Part B is the Design Critique Forum held in Week 7.
