Construction Procurement examines key concepts and principles of construction procurement, i.e. methods, processes, and practices of building procurement. You will become familiar with contemporary international practices of construction procurement, i.e. relational contracting, strategic alliances, and public-private partnerships. You will develop skills to critically examine the complexity of issues associated with strategic procurement and components of procurement processes. Through a number of national and international case studies, you will analyze the impacts of construction procurement decisions on economic, environmental, social, and cultural outcomes. You will reflect on the key themes in relation to procurement strategies, i.e. partnering culture as well as management of risks, relationships, and supply chains. This unit also develops your skills to apply advanced practice knowledge in construction procurement within complex construction team environments in public and private sectors.

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Student feedback described this unit as a ’great learning experience’, which they ‘really enjoyed.’ Students also identified that the learning activities developed their ‘critical thinking and creativity.' One student described the unit overall as a ‘great opportunity to learn' and ‘giving the opportunity to present, that was a really good experience, thanks again.' Students organised and facilitated an industry event at the end of the unit. One student, who was supported to take on the facilitator role wrote, ‘It was really amazing, thanks for your support and commitment to make this possible.’ The Senior Learning Designer visited the class and observed the student learning design for skills development. Her peer feedback noted ‘Great to mention how it all fitted to the Graduate Attributes and Unit Learning Outcomes, students could clearly understand what is expected of them in this assessment.’ For next year, one student recommends including a quiz at the end of the unit.

The suggestion of a quiz is a good idea, for the end of unit industry event which is student-led. Perhaps in combined student and industry teams, the quiz can be held as part of a networking event to extend skills, share knowledge and meet with practitioners.
