Overview

On successful completion of this work integrated learning unit students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge attained in preceding and concurrent units to the professional work environment for the discipline area they are preparing to enter. This authentic practical experience allows students to interact with practicing professionals and to experience the work role which should further develop their technical skills and professional interaction.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Pre-requisites: BMSC11003 Introduction to Medical Sciences Pre-requisites (Pathology Stream): BMSC12003 Haematology Co-requisites (Pathology stream): BMED19003 Clinical Biochemistry or BMSC12010 Clinical Biochemistry Pre-requisites (Clinical Investigation Stream): BMSC12006 – Cardiorespiratory Physiology & Measurement OR BMSC12007 – Neurophysiology & Measurement

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

The work book had little focus on the placement that i did. I did a cardiovascular placement and only had 4 pages in the workbook compared to respiratory and neuro. Possibly create workbooks for each discipline.

Recommendation

To revise the workbook, so work load for assessment for each discipline os equal.

1 Practical and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Placement Workbook

Task Description

To provide structure to the learning during the placement, a workbook will act as the principle learning activity and assessment tool. There are two separate workbooks; one for students specialising in pathology and another for those specialising in clinical investigations. Each workbook has been developed in collaboration with employers and using professional body guidelines. Training 'at the bench' or 'in the clinic setting' will be supervised by a qualified Medical Scientist, but actual training may be delegated to other competent staff. A series of activities have been designed to test the student's ability to contextualise the training. At the end of periods of training in particular tasks the training supervisor will assess competence and sign a declaration that the student has demonstrated a basic level of competence to perform the defined task. To develop their communication skills students will be encouraged to ask questions of other members of the team in order to answer some of the questions in the workbook.

Some tasks can be marked against the standard CQUniversity grading criteria and will be used to determine an overall mark for the unit, whilst the competence-based tasks will be evaluated on a simple pass/fail basis. The student must pass all competence-based tasks for which they have received training. If the competence-based tasks are failed then a mark of zero will be entered as the mark for this unit irrespective of any percentage marks gained on other forms of assessment.

Assessment Criteria

The workbook provides a breakdown of marks associated for each task and also provides guidance on what the marker is expecting you to include or consider. A minimum overall mark of 50% must be achieved for the marked assessment to pass the unit.

2 Off-campus Activity

Assessment Title
Off-campus activity (Placement Supervisor Report)

Task Description

Your placement supervisor will be requested to complete, sign and return a report to the SMAS Clinical Placements Coordinator regarding your placement. This report will assess:

  1. Adherence to Health and Safety requirements whilst on placement
  2. Respect for confidentiality requirements whilst on placement
  3. Professionalism, interaction and communication whilst on placement
  4. Professional behaviour whilst on placement
  5. Capability whilst on placement
  6. Additional comments
