Overview
In this unit, you will develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of pharmacology and pharmacotherapy relevant to your health profession. You will explore the mechanism of action of major drug classes used in pharmacological interventions or procedures in patient management relevant to your profession. You will be required to demonstrate critical analysis of this content and align this with current practice in your respective professions.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Modularisation of Unit
BMSC12014 is a modularised unit i.e. the content presented in this unit has been tailored to accommodate students in the CV69 and CG95 courses. This means that, at certain times during the term, students from each course will study different content (as listed in the Unit Schedule). Furthermore, although all students will complete the same assessments tasks, there will be "profession-specific" case studies/questions for students in each course to complete. Further guidance pertaining to the modularisation of BMSC12014 is provided on the unit Moodle site.
Lectures and Tutorials
Unit Study Commitment
As per Australian education standards, you are expected to commit 150 hours of engagement to your study of this unit. A suggestion of how you should allocate your study commitment per week is as follows:
- 2-3 hours watching recorded lectures and attending/viewing the tutorial.
- 1-2 hours completing the recommended readings.
- 2-3 hours completing the weekly study questions and practice assessment activities.
- 3-4 hours preparing for the Online Quizzes, Drug Poster or Online Test.
1 Online Quiz(zes)
Understanding the principles of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and drug development is essential for many health professions. The purpose of this assessment task is to evaluate your knowledge and understanding of this material (which will be presented in Weeks 1 to 4 of term).
- You will complete one (1) Online Quiz.
- The quiz will be available for a period of one (1) week – it will open at 11:55 am on Friday 7th August 2020 (Week 4) and will close at 11:55 am on Friday 14th August 2020 (Week 5).
- Prior to the quiz opening, you will be provided with six (6) written case studies.
- The questions that you will answer in the quiz will be about the case studies. Therefore, you should ensure that you have read through the case studies thoroughly before attempting the quiz.
- The quiz will be comprised of 40 questions and you will have 60 minutes (1 hour) to complete it.
- You will provide short written answers for each question (no more than five (5) words per question).
- Exemplar case studies, quiz questions and responses will be worked through in the tutorials. Hence, you will be very familiar with the assessment format and requirements before you complete this task.
- You will have only one (1) attempt to complete the quiz.
- Your score from the quiz will contribute 20% to your final grade.
- You are required to obtain at least 50% of the available marks to be eligible to pass the unit.
- In the absence of an approved extension, there will be no opportunity to complete the task after the closing date of the quiz.

2 Written Assessment
In your role as a health professional, you will provide healthcare to patients with a variety of pharmacologically-managed conditions. Additionally, you may be expected to find, appraise and distill information from the scientific literature in order to answer clinical questions/assist with patient care. This assessment task provides you with an opportunity to practice this skill of condensing complex pharmacological information into a practical summary.
You will be given a selection of case studies (available on the Moodle site) which are like what you may come across in the clinical environment . You are to select one (1) case study that is relevant to your health profession. You will then select one (1) drug that can be used to address the case study. Your chosen drug will be the topic for your assessment in which you will produce a poster that provides information on the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and applications of your selected drug.
You will achieve this by using the scientific literature to learn about your drug. Peer-reviewed journal articles should form the basis of this search. The key areas of interest include: the pharmacological action of the drug (i.e. its mechanism of action), its routes of administration, indications, side effects, contraindications/precautions and drug interactions. You will then summarise this information (in your own words) by creating an electronic poster with appropriate citation to your sources of literature. The crux of this assessment task is to achieve a balance between presenting an informative poster while ensuring that your summary is succinct and includes only the most relevant/important details.

Week 10 Friday (25 Sept 2020)
Results and feedback will be available via Moodle.
The drug poster will be evaluated in accordance with a marking rubric available on the unit's Moodle site. The total maximum grade for this assessment task is 60 marks. A brief overview of the assessment criteria are as follows:
- 40 marks available for the scientific content that demonstrates a clear understanding of the pharmacological action of the drug (i.e. its mechanism of action), its routes of administration, indications, side effects, contraindications/precautions and drug interactions.
- 10 marks available for the appropriate use of references and formatting of the reference list - it is expected that a minimum of five (5) scientific references will be used (ideally peer-reviewed journal articles).
- 10 marks available for the visual effectiveness (colour schemes, images, font, etc.) and presentation of the poster (i.e. spelling, grammar, sentence structure and punctuation).

- Discuss pharmacological applications associated with common procedures undertaken with your health profession

3 Online Test
The purpose of this assessment task is to evaluate your understanding of the drugs and basic pharmacological principles which we have covered in this unit (Weeks 1-11).

You will complete one (1) Online Test.
- The test is comprised of ten (10) questions which will contain multiple sub-questions.
- You will provide short answers for each question.
- Each question is worth a total of ten (10) marks. Hence, there are 100 marks available in this assessment task.
- Only one (1) attempt is permitted for this assessment task.
- Your score from the Online Test will contribute 60% to your final grade.
- You are required to obtain at least 50% of the available marks to be eligible to pass the unit (i.e. > 50 out of 100 marks).
- The Online Test will be held after the Term 2 2020 Course Review Period.
- If you are unable to complete the Online Test on the nominated date, you will have to apply for a Deferred Assessment.
The exact time and date of the Online Test will be made available via Moodle once the University Online Examination Timetable has been finalised.
Results and feedback will be available following review by the unit coordinator.
