Overview
In this unit, you will develop fundamental ballet and contemporary dance skills and the terminology associated with theatre stagecraft. You will prepare ballet and contemporary dance exercises and routines as set by your dance tutor.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

From weeks 6 to 12 you will build upon the skills you have developed to increase your range of fundamental dance skills to include
- musicality, meter, rhythm, tempo
- coordination, intention and efficiency of movement
- spatial awareness, planes, levels and pathways
- motion, connection through motion and kinetic chains
You will apply all these developing fundamental skills in the rehearsal and development of ballet and contemporary dance sequences as choreographed by your tutors.

1 Practical Assessment
Dance is art form that only improves through participation and applied practice. This assessment is a measure of the improvement in your core dance skills across the duration of the unit including fundamental skills in body conditioning, ballet, contemporary dance and stagecraft. The appraisal will factor in your levels of energy, accuracy, commitment, expressive coordination, and anatomical alignment. You are expected to maintain an attendance rate to all scheduled classes of 90% or above. If you have an attendance rate below 90% you will need to provide formal evidence for absence as per university policies. Unsatisfactory attendance and participation may be graded as AF (Absent Fail) for this assessment.

2 Practical Assessment
As your fundamental dance skills improve throughout the term, your tutors will develop simple choreographed dance sequences for you to rehearse and develop as solo performers, or in pairs. You will have two dance sequences to develop, one in ballet and one in contemporary dance. Each sequence will be between three to five minutes in length, at the discretion of the tutor. You will be required to present both sequences in a simulated performance environment in the exam review week (week eleven) of the term. Participation is essential for the learning, rehearsal and development of the dance sequences. You are expected to maintain an attendance rate to all scheduled classes and rehearsals of 90% and above or you need to provide formal evidence for absence as per university policies. Unsatisfactory attendance and participation may be graded as AF (Absent Fail) for this assessment.
Review/Exam Week Friday (14 June 2019) 9:00 pm AEST
Assessment will involve live presentation of the dance sequences, which will be recorded for assessment evidence and review purposes.
Exam Week Friday (21 June 2019)

- Demonstration of applied fundamental dance skills as developed over the course of the unit including level of energy, accuracy, commitment, expressive coordination, and anatomical alignment. (40%)
- Participation and commitment to all scheduled classes and rehearsals leading up to the presentation of the dance sequences. (10%)
- Evidence of stagecraft skills in execution of the dance sequences, including adapting to unforeseen eventualities. (10%)
