General Information

Overview

In Foundations of Chiropractic 4, you will commence development of manipulative technique setups relative to the spine and pelvis, temporomandibular joints and extremities. You will continue to build your knowledge of functional biomechanics of the spine, pelvis and extremities as you perform further musculoskeletal assessments. Current public health issues and the potential roles of the chiropractic profession will be investigated.

Attendance Requirements

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Task Description

The on-line quizzes in this unit are intended to provide you with both summative and formative feedback as you develop your key chiropractic adjustive skills and learn to appreciate the role of chiropractic and contemporary public health issues. They will vary in expectations but will be in multiple choice question format, typically with one correct answer only, based on material from previous or current week's lectures. It is essential that you review the material before attempting the quizzes. The date and time will be scheduled fortnightly throughout the term with the dates shown on Moodle.

2 Portfolio

Assessment Title
ePortfolio Assignment

Task Description

In this unit you will create a reflective assignment based on selection criteria associated with the online activities, discussions, and material presented during the term. The ePortfolio in Weebly will provide the evidence of the quality and quantity of your online/in-class learning. This ePortfolio can be used to evaluate and enhance your learning and/or be used to critically reflect and develop deeper learning. It may be used to evolve skills set which will be essential during your career such as documenting your professional portfolio, achievements and continued development. Note that you will continue to develop your reflective writing skills in future units in the course.

You will develop your creative ability in providing sample MCQ questions and the submission of a condition presentation (in the ePortfolio) on predetermined topics as identified on the Moodle site during the first week.

Assessment Criteria

The ePortfolio will have two components.

(i) with question submission You must create a section in your ePortfolio of multiple choice questions which could be used to assess the unit. Grades will be determined based upon the quality and usefulness of your questions. You must submit five (5) questions with two (2) being technique specific, one (1) being biomechanical in nature and the remaining two (2) being clinical application. You will be required to have four (4) distractors per question. The URL to the ePortfolio can be submitted. This will account for 10% of the overall grade.

(ii) reflection. You are to create a power point presentation and a video recording about the selected condition. All the information of your presentation (and your explanation and delivery of it) will be embed that in your ePortfolio. This assignment will require demographic and clinical manifestations of the condition; how differential diagnoses are developed, along with prevalence and traditional and chiropractic management (i.e on general, paediatric, geriatric populations and with any appropriate modifications). You will need to review current literature and provide references. There will be specific rubrics for the ePortfolio (via Weebly) available in Moodle to which you can refer for further information. This will account for 20% of the overall grade.

3 Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)

OSCE

Task Description

In practice, the chiropractor is required to develop a variety of psychomotor as well as clinical skills.  All skills/techniques taught within this unit must be mastered.  You must have a strong understanding of their applications.  The primary focus of this assessment will be on the contextual nature of the adjustment/manipulation. ion addition to refining the skill itself.  Each of these activities will require the student to complete various technique tasks over a specific time period.

OSCE dates subject to revision due to COVID-19 pandemic. Announcements will be placed in Moodle in due course when specific details are known. However, it will occur during or after week 12.

Pass/Fail - however you will be required to achieve a mininum of 70% on each component to satisfactorily receive a passing grade.

Assessment Criteria

The objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) in CHIR12006 are made up of multiple tasks.  Each task will require the student to demonstrate appropriate consent, hygiene, professionalism, and applying psychomotor technical aspects to specific assessment tasks.  The exact duration of the tasks will be determined and announced at a later date.

You will be required to provide indications for as well as perform several spinal and peripheral setups with mock thrusts (at an intermediate level) demonstrating correct technique, appropriate patient handling, developing appropriate tension and control.  You will have a set time to complete all the tasks.  If any part of the tasks is incomplete within the allocated time, the practical elements will be stopped and you will be graded based on your performance to that point.

The final assessment will be recorded to enable moderation, however, these recordings will not routinely be available for student feedback. Direct verbal feedback can be received from the unit coordinator and/or tutors at any appropriate time as per CQU policies.
