Overview
Digital Literacies for University equips students with the digital skills, academic practices and critical awareness required for effective participation in contemporary university study. The unit focuses on the practical and ethical use of digital tools commonly used across higher education, with an emphasis on developing confidence, independence and academic integrity. Students learn to format academic documents to meet university standards for structure, layout, referencing and citation, supporting clear and credible written communication. Visual literacy is developed through the creation of images, graphics and presentations that apply fundamental principles of design and audience awareness. The unit also builds digital communication skills through the development of a recorded presentation using audio and video technologies appropriate for an academic audience. The unit develops foundational data literacy through the use of spreadsheet software and generative AI tools to organise, analyse and present information for academic purposes. Students are supported to critically evaluate digital and AI‑generated outputs, recognising their capabilities, limitations and ethical implications. Assessment tasks scaffold skill development across the term and integrate practical digital artefacts with reflective academic writing, preparing students for the digital demands of undergraduate study.
