Overview
In this unit you will acquire knowledge of the key principles and data used to assess the cardiovascular system. This unit prepares you for the clinical workplace through the development of skills in cardiovascular assessment. These will include electrophysiology, cardiac angiography, non-invasive cardiac and respiratory measurements and a variety of cardiac imaging procedures. You will then apply your knowledge to the analysis of the outcomes of that assessment. You are required to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to work in a clinical setting, and will be assessed within a simulated environment. You must pass this unit to be eligible to attend clinical placement in year 2.

1 Practical Assessment
Skills test - CRM Device
- This is a PASS/FAIL assessment.
- The assessment challenges students' ability to perform routine CRM device set up and check advanced beginner level.
- This is an assessment of the pre-test, interrogation and post-test skills that are further discussed and emphasised in the unit lab manual, instructed labs, lectures, and tutorials.
- Students will be assessed using the ‘Assessment of Readiness for Clinical’ (ARC) tool.
- To achieve a pass, each assessment must be passed individually as these indicate the required standard to progress to the second clinical placement.
- Review the assessment information and ARC tool posted on the unit Moodle site.
- There will be only ONE (1) opportunity (in the Week 10 residential school) to re-sit the technical and/or professional components of the assessment item.
Sub-assessment items
- Professional (pre-test and post-test) requirements:
- Apply patient care techniques and effective communication to obtain relevant patient history, informed consent, and to direct 'patients' accordingly.
- Apply professionalism in dealing with equipment and the testing setting.
Technical (testing) requirements:
- Students are required to perform routine techniques and optimisation of the CRM device interrogation in a reasonable time period, to advanced beginner level.
- CRM skills test is marked as per the ARC tool – testing time limit is 25 minutes.
- The professional and technical components must each be graded as a 'pass' in order to pass the assessment.
- The components are graded separately so that if one is passed and the other is not, only the failed component must be repeated.
- All of the bolded items in the professional assessment must receive full marks to pass the professional assessment.
- If the student has failed only the professional component, the full assessment will be repeated, but the student will only be marked on the professional component.
Week 10 Thursday (21 Sept 2017) 5:00 pm AEST
This assessment will be completed in the week 10 residential school at Abbott/St Jude site
Week 10 Friday (22 Sept 2017)
Skills Test - CRM
- A pass rate of 65% of available marks in EACH component of the practical and professional behaviour must be achieved to pass the assessment
- As per Assessment of Coursework Procedures (Section 3 Assessment Extensions), item 3.2.5, 'these testing tests are considered professional assessment tasks and have an absolute submission date. Accordingly, these assessments must be completed by/on the specified date. In the absence of an approved extension, there will be no opportunity to complete the task after this date, and there will be no opportunity to apply a late penalty'.
- The CRM tutor will observe the student's performance of the full testing procedure and assess each task relative to the stated standards of the Assessment of Readiness for Clinical (ARC) tool. 4 Practical and Written Assessment
Practical and written assessment: Cardiac Physiologists that perform echocardiography must accurately perform multiple standard measurements on many parts of the echocardiography exam. These form part of the standard protocol. These measurements are then used in combination to derive diagnosis, progression and follow-up of pathology. The transcription of these measurements and equations is an integral part of the cardiac physiologist's job. These measures follow the patient's path and will be reinterpreted by multiple specialities over the course of the patient's treatment, thus the accuracy of the measurements and accuracy of the transcription as a provisional report are essential requirements of a cardiac physiologist.
This is a PASS/FAIL assessment.
- The assessment challenges students' ability to perform routine echocardiographic measurements on 2D, colour and spectral Doppler techniques and the accurate transcription of these in a reasonable time period to advanced beginner level.
- This is an assessment of the skills and accuracy of the measurements that are further discussed and emphasised in the unit lab manual, instructed labs, lectures, and tutorials.
- Students will be assessed using a standard set of echocardiography images.
- Students will use QStaion software to complete the measurements.
- Students will transcribe these measurements into a standard echocardiography worksheet
Week 10 Friday (22 Sept 2017) 6:00 pm AEST
This assessment will be performed during the week 10 residential school at CQU
Week 12 Friday (6 Oct 2017)

5 Online Quiz(zes)
The quizzes are to assess your knowledge of the unit material in preparation for the residential schools.
There will be 12 online quizzes.
Each quiz will have 10 questions.
You will be allowed 3 attempts at each quiz.
It is not compulsory to attempt each quiz 3 times. The highest grade you achieve will serve as your final score for that quiz.
Quizzes open at 8 am on Tuesday and close Wednesday at 3pm (AEDT) in each week as specified above.
Once the quiz has commenced you will have approximately 3 minutes per question. For example, a 10 question quiz would be given a time limit of 30 minutes to complete. The total time available for each quiz is subject to change at the discretion of the unit coordinator based on the content of the pool of questions.
No attempts are permitted after the quiz has closed, so ensure adequate time for completion.
Quiz dates and specific topics are available on the unit Moodle site.

Weekly
Week 12 Wednesday (4 Oct 2017) 3:00 pm AEST
Quizzes are due each week at 3pm
Students will receive their score once all students have completed the quiz.
Students must achieve a pass rate of 50% in each of the thirteen (12) quizzes to pass this component.
Answers will be either correct or incorrect and tabulated by the unit Moodle online system.
These are open book quizzes, so you have the opportunity to consult your notes, lecture slides, textbooks and unit Moodle page. However, there will be little time for consulting unit resources and it would be better to collate your own revision sheet from the unit resources prior to attempting the quizzes.
This assessment is to be undertaken as an individual. As with all university examinations, colluding with other students in non-group work tasks is considered academic misconduct.

6 Written Assessment
This assessment will require you to correctly complete and upload the documentation set forth in your ECHO12004 Lab Manual. This includes:
- A signed Scan Lab Record & Formative Feedback Agreement uploaded in week 3 – Friday 28th July 2017 at 5pm AEST.
- A signed Consent Form - Sonographic Examination for Teaching Purposes in week 3 – Friday 28th July 2017 at 5pm AEST.
- 7 Completed Formative Feedback Forms uploaded in week 12 – Friday Oct 6 2017 at 5pm AEST.
- Completed Scan Lab Attendance Record uploaded in week 12 – Friday Oct 6 2017 at 5pm AEST.
- Uploaded documentation needs to be in pdf format only and be accurately filled out.
- 4 paper based inclass quizzes at the end of each residential school 50% pass required
The purpose of this assessment is to prepare you for documentation responsibilities in clinical placement, as well as to develop self-reflection skills by setting goals and following up on progress.
There is an example of a completed Formative Feedback Form in your Lab Manual. You are required to complete your Formative Feedback Forms BEFORE leaving at the end of each lab (as you would be required to complete documentation for each case before the end of a clinical shift) and to have it signed by your instructor. Working clinically, patients and physicians rely on quick, efficient, accurate, and complete documentation to issue treatment.
This assessment ties in with the on-campus Professional Behaviour Assessment - failure to have your Formative Feedback Form signed at the end of a lab will result in a demerit point being issued. If you do not have all lab days signed off on your Lab Attendance, you will need to write in the reason for this (i.e. sick, didn’t get signed – demerit issued, etc.), however all forms in this assessment must be completed and either signed off on or an explanation given to pass this assessment.
Ensure you check times and deadlines for submissions, and that all paperwork is completed correctly and accurately, including uploading in the required format. Failure to do so will result in a fail mark for that assessment component.
This is a pass/fail assessment task – a fail grade for any component of a pass/fail assessment task will result in a fail grade for the whole assessment task. As this is a pass/fail unit, all assessment tasks need to be passed to pass this unit.
Week 12 Friday (6 Oct 2017) 5:00 pm AEST
Students will be given a pass/fail result within 14 days.
In a non-graded pass/fail unit, all assessment items must be correctly and accurately submitted by the due date, as there is no opportunity to apply a five percent penalty, due to the pass/fail nature of each assessment task.
Students who fail a single assessment task in a pass-fail unit, or who fail a pass-fail component of a graded unit, will be deemed to have failed that unit.
Conditions
Minimum mark or grade. All documentation must be completed correctly, and uploaded on time and in the right format

7 On-campus Activity
Professional behaviour is a critical part of any medical imaging profession, and encompasses the manner in which we treat our colleagues, patients, and the professional settings and equipment provided to us. The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that students from the medical echocardiography course are well-equipped to embody the high standards of professionalism that are expected from CQUniversity students while on clinical placements.
-
This assessment will require you to treat each of your lab sessions as a scheduled "work shift" and to exhibit high quality professional attributes to ensure you are prepared to enter the work force with the 1. 2. 3. skills required to provide safe patient care and professional behaviour. As such, this assessment is based on continuous and ongoing assessment of student application and attendance during labs. Note: this extends to all behavior exhibited by you during your time studying this unit. This includes participation in forums and online tutorials, labs, social media etiquette, phone calls, attitude towards peers and staff; and all official correspondence with university staff, peers, and community.
This is a PASS/FAIL assessment. This assessment is scored using a demerit point system - to pass this unit, a student can receive a MAXIMUM of three (3) demerit points i.e. if a fourth demerit point is issued, the assessment will be graded as a FAIL. As this is a PASS/FAIL unit, all assessment items must be graded as a pass to be awarded a pass in this unit.
All interactions with staff and peers pertaining to this unit will be treated as a replica of the clinical work environment. You will be expected to demonstrate all of the professional behaviour that will be expected of you in a formal work environment. Demerit points can be issued in three (3) different categories:
- Professional behaviours towards colleagues.
- Professional behaviours towards patients.
- Professional behaviours NOT in professional settings and equipment.
Expected behaviour and its relevance to the clinical environment is listed under the Professional Behaviour Assessment Outline on the unit Moodle site. You must review this information and be aware of what is expected of you for this unit.
Be aware that NOT having your Formative Feedback Forms signed after your lab day would have consequences in a clinical setting and will warrant a demerit point. You will be required to fill out a Formative Feedback Form for each of your labs, but not for the dates of your practical skills and competency tests as outlined in the lab manual. It is very important that you familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct in the Lab Manual as well as the ASAR Code of Conduct and the CQU Code of Conduct. All of these documents are posted on the unit Moodle site for your information.
If unprofessional behaviour is reported by fellow classmates and not witnessed by a staff member, a written warning detailing the allegations will be issued to the student, and the student's response documented. If further evidence of an on-going unprofessional behaviour surfaces, then a demerit point may be issued.
Up to three (3) demerit points can be issued before the assessment is graded as a FAIL. However, if any exhibited behaviour is deemed as UNSAFE for clinical practice, the professional behaviour assessment will be graded as a FAIL at the discretion of the unit coordinator.
Week 12 Friday (6 Oct 2017) 5:00 am AEST
A Pass/Fail grade will be uploaded to gradebook within 7 working days of due date.
When a demerit point is issued, it will be discussed between the student, on-site lecturer and / or the unit coordinator. Written documentation explaining the reason for the demerit point will be provided to the student, signed by the on-site tutor or unit coordinator.
Accruing FOUR or more demerit points in the unit will result in the assessment being graded as a FAIL. As this is a pass/fail unit, all assessment items must be graded as a pass to successfully pass the unit.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
