1. Residential school is called off:  Lab kits will be sent to students so that they can do the laboratory exercises at home. 

2. In-class test planned to carry out during residential school will be conducted as a Moodle On-line Quiz so that students are not required to physically present in campus to sit for In-Class test.

3.  End of term final examination will be replaced by a time bounded Assignments. (ie: students need to complete Assignment with in few days.)

General Information

Overview

This unit introduces you to modelling electrical components and systems. You will apply theorems and network reduction techniques to DC and AC circuits, and apply problem solving techniques in the analysis of AC and DC circuits. You will also cover the concepts of transient response, and Laplace transform and transfer functions. You will apply laboratory techniques and appropriate software tools to the analysis of electrical circuits. Use fundamental electrical engineering language in context and document the process of modelling and analysis. You will present information, communicate, work and learn in a professional manner. Mix mode students must complete the practical activities by attending residential school.

Prereq: (ENAG11002 Energy & Electricity or ENEG11009 Fundamentals of Energy & Electricity) and MATH11160 Technology Mathematics

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Residential school was done slightly early where lab 3 and 4 material hadn't covered prior to doing labs.

Recommendation

Strive to delay the residential school as much as possible and continue with our usual practice (teach theoretical concepts not covered but necessary to carry out the labs during residential school).

  6. Use appropriate software tools to simulate electrical circuits and verify the results by conducting laboratory experiments using safe work practices
  7. Work individually and in a team to solve electrical circuit problems and produce professional laboratory documents.

In-class test

Task Description

This assessment covers weekly topics from Week 1 to Week 5. Students are required to answer analytical and numerical questions to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge and analytical problem solving skills.

Students will sit this in-class test during Residential school in Rockhampton.

Further information about In-class test will be provided in the unit Moodle site.

Students who are unable to attend the compulsory Residential school and sit the In-Class test may consider unenorlling from this unit  before the census date (31st of March 2020).

Online Quizzes (Progressive Tests)

Task Description

The assessment is a set of online Progressive tests which can be accessed via the unit Moodle site. The progressive tests are an integrated part of the study to test on the key concepts f each week. Details of the assessment can be found on the unit Moodle site at the beginning of the term. Each Progressive test will be available up to 2 weeks after the relevant week to allow students who cannot find time each week for study. For example Progressive test one will close at the end of week 2 and Progressive test 2 will close at end of week 5. All progressive tests must be completed by the end of week 10. 

Each progressive test can be attempted several times, but the score for the Progressive test will be score for your first attempt. Correct answer for the Progressive test questions will be available immediately after you submit your answers. If you encounter any network access issues during the Progressive test, the unit coordinator should be notified at your earliest convenient.

3 Practical Assessment

Practical and written assessment

Task Description

This assessment item covers all topics.

Laboratories will be held at the residential school. All information regarding the laboratories will be provided to the students via the unit Moodle site at the start of the term.

Laboratory attendance is compulsory and all students must pass the laboratory exercise assessment in order to pass the unit. Laboratory reports of students who did not attend the laboratory sessions will not be accepted for marking and will be awarded zero marks.

Students need to answer a set of online quizzes to complete this assessment task.

Although students will be working in teams during the laboratory sessions, each student must submit an individual laboratory report (not one report per laboratory group) by the due date.
