Overview
This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge developed in your academic course to engineering practice. This unit will also develop new engineering practice skills and knowledge. You will document and reflect on work activities and relate them to Engineers Australia's Stage 1 Competency Standards and develop a strategic approach to personal growth in the workplace. You are required to undertake a minimum of 240 hours of work placement, which may require relocation of accommodation to suit the placement. Students should contact the unit coordinator prior to enrolment in this unit to discuss placement requirements.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
At least 36 credit points of the Master's course complete.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. See details in the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

The focus of this unit is to give students an opportunity to see how to apply their engineering skills in a workplace and to realise there are other skills they need to develop. All of the Stage 1 competencies are relevant and students will also get a chance to see how the Stage 2 competencies are relevant in the workplace.

1 Portfolio
The Portfolio gives you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt in this internship program.
In your Portfolio, you must respond to the learning outcomes, giving examples of how you have met each of them. During your internship placement, you will be required to participate in an individual presentation. The presentation gives you an opportunity to discuss your work and how it aligns with the Engineers Australia Stage-1 competencies.
The portfolio comprises of four individual assessments in the form of written assignments and a professional engineering presentation, which is directly related to the learning outcomes. The three written assignments; (i) host organisation overview, organisation structure and your role; (ii) application of engineering knowledge in the workplace; and (iii) professional engineering project; will form the body of the portfolio. To assist in the submission as well as continuous progress monitoring, the assignments are given separate submission deadlines. The final portfolio should include all the component items and follow the sequence mentioned below:

All components of the portfolio must be written (typed) in English using Times New Roman font (size 12), in your own words and will act as evidence of your communication skills. Each assessment item within the portfolio must clearly demonstrate your ability to apply engineering knowledge and skills. State what you did and describe how you did it, emphasise on your role and your contribution to the project (for example I designed, I checked, I investigated etc.). Each component should discuss the engineering problems you identified and/or particular problem-solving techniques you applied. The purpose of this is to assess your personal contribution to meeting project goals

You must provide evidence of your achievement of each of the Learning Outcomes, required log hours and internship certificate from the host organisation.
There is an Assessment Criteria sheet for this unit available on the Unit Moodle site. The Assessment Criteria sheet gives guidance regarding the type of evidence required for each level of achievement. It is important that you review the Criteria sheet before commencing your internship placement at the host organisation, so you are familiar with the evidence you need to collect throughout the placement.
There are minimum requirements for the Portfolio and you must provide evidence of the minimum requirements in order to be eligible for a passing grade for this unit.
