Overview
This unit will introduce you to the fundamentals of industrial instrumentation and automation systems. You will learn the principles of operation of different sensors, actuators, instrumentation amplifiers, and industrial data communication busses. You will also learn noise cancellation and signal conditioning, sensor and actuator interfacing, programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, and process control. You will learn how to specify the requirements for sensors, actuators, and control equipment for a given task, evaluate multiple options available and select the best combination of them for your design. You will also design, fabricate, and program production lines for a given product using industry-standard components and PLCs. You will carry out product line programming using a simulated software environment. In this unit, you must complete compulsory practical activities. Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Prerequisites: ENEX12002 Introductory Electronics OR (ENEE13018 Analogue Elecctronics & ENEE13020 Digital Electronics ) AND ENEE12016 Signals and Systems
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. See details in the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Feedback is given on the returned answer script and further detailed feedback provided in the discussion class when students request. This practice was highly appreciated by participating students, however, those who didn't participate in the discussion class missed this opportunity. In the future, this will be communicated to students in advance to encourage everyone to participate in the discussion class.

3 Practical Assessment
This task involves laboratory experiments on industrial automation and instrumentation (due to COVID-19 restrictions these hands-on lab exercises will be replaced by simulations). 4 Take Home Exam
This take-home examination is a time-limited assessment that will be available to students only during the scheduled examination time. It will be open book examination and students can use any printed or electronic material as reference. The answers should be handwritten and scanned after the examination in question order and uploaded by the given deadline.

Take Home Examination will be held during the University examination period and the date and time will be notified via Moodle.
Exam answer papers will not be returned.
