Overview
In this unit, you will enhance your professional development in exercise and sport science by becoming a reflective practitioner. Additionally, you will gain authentic practical exercise delivery via work integrated learning, as well as practically focused assessments, which will allow you to gain the skills that are required of a graduating exercise and sport science professional. This will involve working with primarily healthy populations under the supervision of appropriate health or exercise and sport science practitioners, during which time you will further develop your skills in the development and delivery of exercise and sports science related activities.

Assessment Overview
Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Have your say survey
Students provided feedback that the residential school and associated Practical Assessment item increased their confidence and ability to enter the workforce as a practitioner in Exercise and Sport Science.
It is recommended to continue with the residential school and associated Practical Assessment Item. As this is the first year this assessment item and residential school has been implemented, it is also recommended that the assessment tasks are continually reviewed to ensure they are current and industry focused.
Feedback from Have your say survery
Students commented that there are a substantial amount of hours required to complete this uni. These hours are associated with the work integrated learning practicum and the residential school. It has been suggested the residential school could have been shortened from four days to three days.
It is recommended to review the amount of hours that students are required to complete during their Work Integrated learning by completing more hours in Term 1 (ESSC13008), as well as the capacity to reduce the time required to complete the residential school. As this was the first year running the residential school for this unit, the timing of teaching and assessment was somewhat unknown; therefore, additional time was scheduled to ensure all assessment tasks could be completed. The timetable for this residential school should be reviewed and optimised to fit within two - three days, dependent on student numbers.
Feedback from Unit Coordinator self reflection
The weighting of the Practical Assessment task and Reflective Practice written assessment should be reviewed, as they are both worth 50% of the unit grade. This weighting does not reflect the amount of hours or work required for each of these tasks.
It is recommended that the weighting of the Practical Assessment task is increased and the Reflective Practice written assessment to be decreased. Alternatively, as other assessment items such as Logbooks and Professional Practice Placement assessment tasks are Pass/Fail, this unit may be better suited to be a Pass/Fail for all assessment items, and this should also be considered.
- Prepare professional documentation related to employment in the exercise and sport science industry
- Reflect on performance and experiences in the exercise and sport science industry
- Conduct the duties of an exercise and sport science practitioner in a professional setting.

Work Integrated Learning
As part of this unit, you are required to undertake 120 hours of work integrated learning (WIL). Once enrolled in this unit, you can access the WIL portal via Sonia Online to arrange your placement site. You are not able to begin your placement until the beginning of Term 2. Further WIL information is available on the unit Moodle website.
Block Practical/Residential School
You are required to attend a block practical/residential school as a part of this unit. Throughout this block practical/residential school you will be familiarised with and complete a series of practical assessments related to your skills as a graduating professional in exercise and sports science, which are aligned to assessment task one "Exercise and Sport Science Practical Assessment." Additional information regarding the block practical/residential school is available in the Assessments Tasks section of this unit profile, and the unit Moodle website.
The block practical/residential school for this unit will be held between Tuesday 29th September (8:30am start) - Thursday 2nd October (4:00pm finish) (Week 11). Due to government COVID-19 travel and social isolation restrictions at the time of preparing this unit profile, this will be delivered wholly online and you will be required to complete a number of activities individually and in a group. You will be provided with modified assessments and tasks compared to previous years that you are able to complete at home with minimal equipment, which will still allow you to achieve all unit learning outcomes.
1 Practical Assessment
In this practical assessment task you will further develop your skills in accordance with Exercise and Sports Science Australia's standards. These standards include, but are not limited to; Health Exercise and Sport Assessment, Health Exercise and Sport Psychology, Motor Control and Learning, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, and Functional Anatomy. This assessment task has a compulsory block practical/residential school, where you will be given the opportunity to further develop and be assessed on the skills that you have learnt throughout the Exercise and Sport Sciences Course. You will be provided with case studies that will form the basis for your assessment. The case studies will be assigned to you two (2) weeks prior to attending your block practical/residential school. Prior to attending the block practical/residential school you will need to select a series of screening, tests, and assessments (practical assessments) from which you must choose as appropriate for the provided case studies, as aligned to the components listed below. During the practical assessments you will conduct your chosen screening and/or tests/assessments, interpret data from the results, and develop recommendations in the form of SOAP notes (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan). You will be provided with information regarding the available pre-screening tools, tests, assessments, and SOAP notes via the unit Moodle website and lectures. It is recommended that you select the appropriate tests/assessments prior to attending the block practical/residential school, so that you can make best use of the designated practice times on the first day of the block practical/residential school. Following the completion of your practical assessments, you are required to create and submit handover notes associated with the outcomes of the practical assessment that you performed, following the SOAP notes format.
The practical assessments aligned to ESSA Standards that you may be assessed on include the following five (5) components:
- Health Assessment and Health Exercise and Sport Psychology: Undertaking a pre-screening with a client and questioning them about their goals and motivation to exercise, pre-screening practical assessments may include taking blood pressure, height, weight, body fat percentage, and/or capillary blood samples for the assessment and interpretation of blood glucose, cholesterol or blood lactate, or other assessments as related to your case study
- Motor Control and Learning: These practical assessments may include balance tests (star excursion, balance error scoring system), multi-directional reach test, pegboard test, dual tasking, and postural stability, or other as related to your case study
- Exercise Physiology and Exercise and Sport Assessment: These practical assessments may include performing a graded exercise test and taking and analysing capillary blood samples, performing tests for speed agility and/or power, setting up and calibrating a metabolic cart and/or a 12 lead ECG, or other assessments as related to your case study
- Biomechanics and Functional Anatomy: These practical assessments may include analysing an exercise or movement using an app on a mobile device (e.g. iPad or tablet) or computer, electronic timing lights, or a force plate and assessing measures such as joint angles, force, and/or velocity, performing a movement screen or functional test, for example a modified Thomas Test, overhead squat, Apley's scratch test, or other assessments as related to your case study
- Handover SOAP notes: You will be required to write a brief summary in the form of SOAP notes for each of the above practical assessment components
Your handover SOAP notes are due one week following your practical assessment. This will be Week 12 Thursday (8 Oct. 2020) 5:00pm AEST
Block practical/residential school dates

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
