Overview
In this unit you will examine the nature of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as developed by the International Organisation for Standards and Standards Australia. Topics include: concepts of EMS, ISO 14000 series (including ISO 14001 and ISO 14004), implementing EMSs, risk assessment, auditing and certification, relationships with Environmental Impact Assessment and the concept of continual improvement. You will review case studies focused on the implementation and functioning of environmental management systems in Australia and in other countries. You will use your learned knowledge and skills to develop your own draft environmental management system for a hypothetical or actual organisation.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Prerequisite: Minimum of 24 credit points
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

The Online Quizzes will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of EMS concepts and procedures, including aspects of your ability to meet the following course learning objectives:

2 Written Assessment
For this assessment piece, you will prepare a draft EMS Manual based on AS/NZS ISO 14001: 2016 Amd 1:2024 for a hypothetical or actual small organisation.
This will include a short explanatory paper of about 4-5 pages that explains key elements of your Manual’s design and includes a bibliography. The explanation paper should be placed at the start of the draft EMS Manual as a single document of 50 pages or less.
You will complete sections of your draft EMS Manual throughout the term, and submit them separately in three parts:
Part A: Four sections of the explanatory paper, EMS clauses 4.1-5.3 and one related document
Part B: One section of the explanatory paper, EMS clauses 6-6.2.2 and four related documents
Part C: Complete draft EMS Manual (Part C). Students will be allowed to update the detail from Parts A and B based on feedback when they submit everything in the final Part C document. The Part C submission should include the following Clauses from AS/NZS ISO14001: 2016 Amd 1: 2024 including some fully completed documents.

Assignments will be returned within 14 days of being submitted.
The three parts of this assessment will be evaluated on the basis of the quantity and quality of the research and
analysis that has gone into the project, the effectiveness of the written communication of that research, and alignment of documentation with the AS/NZS ISO 14001: 2016 Amd 1: 2024 standard.
Part A Marking Criteria:

- Completeness of explanatory paper, and all required EMS clauses, registers, and supporting documents
- Effectively incorporates feedback and improves content from Parts A and B
- Well-developed operational controls, demonstrating understanding of environmental management
- Consistent use of document control aligned with AS/NZS ISO 14001: 2016
- Clearly outlines monitoring, auditing, and continual improvement mechanisms
- Well-structured presentation, concise and professional writing style, complete and correct referencing
- Locate and apply specific Standards Australia documentation in order to research the various designs and elements of an environmental management system
- Develop a draft environmental management system with adequate documentation for a hypothetical (or actual) small organisation.
