Overview
This unit develops students' advanced knowledge and skills in applied demography, focusing on the analysis and interpretation of population changes and trends at the community level. You will develop advanced knowledge of key demographic measures and explore demographic processes and characteristics, including population growth and decline, age and sex composition, fertility, mortality, life expectancy, family demography and migration. You will develop practical skills in acquiring and analysing demographic information and applying demographic methods to real-world population data. You will examine how demographic changes vary across places and over time, with particular attention to regional communities and the population challenges they face, including population decline, changing demographic structures and implications for community sustainability. You will also explore population distribution and spatial change, and undertake population projections for future population trends. Through applied demographic analysis and professional reporting, you will develop advanced analytical and communication skills relevant to policy development, administration, business and research.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Completion of 18 credit points
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
