General Information

Overview

This unit discusses the changing nature of employment relations. In this unit you will assess the role of state, employers, unions and employees in employment relations within the context of a changing labour market. You will analyse the legal, political and economic framework within which employment relations takes place. Contemporary issues will be highlighted and discussed.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Task Description

Purpose: This written assessment is designed to help students develop a critical understanding of employment relations issues in contemporary organisations from the current academic literature and research studies. This assessment task also allows students to demonstrate skills and knowledge in researching and evaluating sources for academic work.

Task: Discuss the employment relations issues that arise from the management of a diverse workforce in Australia. How are these issues managed within the Australian system of employment relations?

Word Length: 2000-2500 words (excluding references and Appendix) Please note that information that is relevant to this essay will be posted on the Unit website.

Your assessment will be marked out of 40 with the following distribution:

-Depth of knowledge and critical analysis of the topic (25)

-Appropriateness of responses to the topic question (5)

-Relevant and accurate literature (5)

-Essay has clear introduction, main body and conclusion. Clarity of expression/grammar and spelling (2)

-Correct referencing style (2)

-Appropriate word length (i.e., 2000-2500 words excluding references) relevant to the topic (1)

Task Description

Please note that our Assessment 2 (Take Home Exam) will take 24 hours to complete between 9 AM 12 June 2023 until 9 AM 13 June 2023 (AEST). The question paper and submission link to upload your answer paper will remain open from 9 AM 12 June 2023 until 9 AM 13 June 2023 (AEST).

Related Information:

1. You have to answer any three (3) of the seven (7) questions on the take-home exam paper. If more than three

questions are answered, only the first three will be marked. All questions are of equal value – twenty marks each.

2. Each question should have a maximum word count of 1000 words. Therefore, you should write 500-1000 words on each question.

3. The total word count for this take-home paper will be 3000 words.

4. You should identify each of your answers by heading it with the question number – e.g., Q1.

5. Assessment 2 (take-home exam) will be worth 60 marks.
