The English for Academic Purposes 3 unit (EAP 3) will help you develop reading, writing, listening, speaking and study skills required for university study on courses with an entry level requirement equivalent to IELTS 6.5. By the end of the unit you will be able to: research, plan and write academic assignments e.g. a report; communicate and interact with your lecturers and peers in an academic setting; listen effectively for note-taking during lectures and tutorials; use academic reading skills to improve your reading speed and comprehension; give a presentation

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
For courses requiring English language entry level of 6.5 with no band less that 6.0, prerequisite is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent or successful completion of the CQUniversity Direct Entry course. No individual band score below 5.5, For courses requiring English language entry level of 6.5 with no band less than 6.5, prerequisite is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent or successful completion of the CQUniversity Direct Entry course. No individual band score below 6.0.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 0-credit Non-award unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 0 hours of study per week, making a total of 0 hours for the unit.

- Read and understand a range of academic written texts at a level of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5. You will be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of the following: a) understanding of textual organisation; b) interpreting visual diagrams and graphs; c) ability to identify gist, specific information and detail; d) an awareness of effective note-taking skills and strategies; e) summarising and paraphrasing f) awareness of how to synthesise and evaluate information in order to state an opinion.
- Listen to and understand a range of study and conversational contexts at a level of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5. This will include demonstrating an appropriate level of the following: a) ability to identify gist, specific information and detail; b) recognition of fact and opinion, d) awareness of audience, purpose and context; d) awareness of effective note-taking skills and strategies; e) awareness of how to synthesise and evaluate information in order to state an opinion.
- Demonstrate competence at a level of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 in the writing process to produce subject specific genres. This will include a) developing effective planning, drafting and editing skills and strategies; b) awareness of how to write different parts of academic texts; c) how to present and support an argument/point of view; c) presenting information in a graph or diagram; e) showing understanding of audience, purpose and context; f) use appropriate register and organisational structure; g) awareness of how to synthesise and evaluate information in order to produce written texts.
- Demonstrate confident and effective oral communication skills at a level of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to contribute and interact appropriately in spoken academic contexts.
- Demonstrate awareness of the independent learning skills and strategies necessary for study at a tertiary level including using information literacy tools, understanding the concept of plagiarism and demonstrating awareness of referencing procedures and convention.
