Overview
Fundamental Mathematics for University introduces foundational concepts, rules and methods of elementary mathematics. You will complete regular module reviews and use the feedback to develop a unified body of knowledge in the fundamentals of mathematics. Topics include operations, percentages, introductory algebra, simple equation solving, exponents, linear equations, introductory statistics, and units and conversions. This provides a foundation for further study in mathematics and a broad range of other academic disciplines.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Non-award unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Written Assessment
You will complete nine modules in MATH40237 (from the Fundamental Mathematics for University Textbook).
There are six submissions of module reviews, as some module reviews have been combined for Moodle submission. These module reviews are available on the MATH40237 Moodle site, along with the due dates for each.
The purpose of these reviews is to monitor your progress throughout the term, allowing you to identify any concepts that require further review. The reviews also provide a basis for communication between you and your Lecturer/Unit Coordinator.
You must achieve an overall average of 50% across the module reviews in order to be awarded a PASS for Assessment Task 1. You must pass Assessment Task 1 in order to be eligible to pass MATH40237 provided all other conditions are met.
Module reviews are due on the Tuesday of the week specified in the Unit Profile Schedule and also found on the unit’s Moodle site.
Module reviews will be marked and returned within 7 days of the review due date or submission date, whichever is the later. These reviews will be returned to all students via the unit’s Moodle site.
Marks for each question in the Module Reviews will be allocated for the following:
- using appropriate setting out;
- following correct mathematical protocols;
- showing all correct steps in the solution;
- answering the questions asked, where appropriate; and
- finding the correct answer.

2 Take Home Exam
Week 6 Tuesday (22 Dec 2020) 9:00 am AEST
Assessment Test A is due to be completed and uploaded into Moodle by Tuesday 22 December at 9.00am. Assessment Test A must be submitted as one (1) pdf file via the ASSESSMENT link on the FMU Moodle site.
Assessment Test A mark will be returned via the unit's Moodle site two (2) weeks from the due date or submission date, whichever is the later.

3 Take Home Exam
Assessment Test B is in the form of a take home exam and will be made available via the unit Moodle site on Monday 15 February at 9:00 AM. The take home exam should take you three (3) hours to complete. You will be given a 24 hour time-frame to access and download the test from the unit’s Moodle website, complete it and upload it back.
Assessment Test B covers material from the EQN1, STAT, EXPO, LINE and UNCN modules. You are expected to successfully complete the relevant Module Reviews for these modules before attempting the take home exam.
Assessment Test B is not a supervised assessment item and you are required to do your own work, maintaining academic integrity with all honesty.
Exam Week Tuesday (16 Feb 2021) 9:00 am AEST
Assessment Test B mark will be returned via the unit's Moodle site on 5 March (Certification of Grades).
Marks for each question will be allocated for the following:
- using appropriate setting out;

- showing all correct steps in the solution;
- answering the question, where appropriate; and
- finding the correct answer.
