Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

Having a facilitator on site that understands how to do our roster, how our book works, how was are graded etc. would be hugely beneficial and perhaps is solely for CQU instead of shared between all unis.

Recommendation

Whilst there have been some changes in clinical facilitation at one facility, the unit coordinator should maintain open lines of communication via phone call and email with both students and the clinical facilitation team.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

Not be so assignment heavy or just do fortnightly quizzes and assignment work is too full on with what already needs to be done for the practical side of this course.

Recommendation

This is a double-weighted unit which consists of a group assessment, an individual reflective portfolio, and clinical placement. In future offerings, the unit coordinator should clearly communicate to students that the assessments and clinical placements are appropriate for a double-weighted unit.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

Streamlining the log book and reducing the number of skills and emphasis on the mandatory skills.

Recommendation

The logbook has been reduced in volume this year and the midiwfery team will continue to evaluate its format on a yearly basis.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

The placement feedback tool was very long and a little repetitive to use. It hasn't sounded that easy to use when i was speaking with my clinical facilitator. It has been great learning from a clearly well informed teachers!

Recommendation

This is the first term where the AMSAT has been utilised electronically on Sonia. The AMSAT remains online but has been changed to make providing comments/feedback simpler. The AMSAT will remain in this format and the midwifery team will review on a term-by-term basis in collaboration with students and industry partners.

Assessment Tasks

1 Poster Sessions

Assessment Title
Assessment 1 – Poster Sessions

Task Description

Type: Individual written assessment & group poster design and presentation

Due date: 2355 (AEST) Friday 5th May 2023 - Week 8

Weighting: 40%

Length: Written assessment – 1500 words. Poster – no limit.

Unit Coordinator: Kelly Haynes

Aim

The aim of this assessment is to enhance your understanding of the midwife as a primary health care provider and educator. You will gain an understanding of the ways in which the midwife fulfils these roles and reflect upon your own learning with regards to the midwife’s role as a primary health care provider and educator.

Instructions

There are two parts to this assessment task – an individual written assessment and a group poster design and presentation.

Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

Part one – Written Assignment (20%)

Select one of your Continuity of Care Experience (COCE) women and complete the following with reference to the chosen woman:

1. Summarise the information gathered about the woman at her booking appointment. Please ensure all confidential information is de-identified.

2. Select a pregnancy-related education topic that has been discussed with your CoCE woman and, utilsing scholarly literature, reflect upon your learning with regards to the chosen pregnancy-related education topic.

Part two – Group Poster Design  (10%)

Students will be required to work in groups to develop and provide a poster presentation on a pregnancy-related health promotional education topic with the target audience being women in their pregnancies. The unit coordinator will assign students to groups of 3 with a specific topic. This will be published on the Moodle discussion board and assessment page.

Within the content of the poster, students are required to:

1. Explain the rationale for the provision of the pregnancy-related education topic

2. Explore the recommended evidence-based recommendations

3. Outline the expected benefits of the recommendations

Part 3: Poster Presentation (10%)

Groups will be required to present their poster during the scheduled Zoom session on Friday 5th May 2023 at 10.00

Each group will have 5 minutes to explain their understanding of the chosen topic and the associated information presented on the poster.

In your discussion you are advised to follow the same format as when producing your poster:

1. Explain the rationale for providing the pregnancy-related education topic: why is important for women?

2. Explore the recommended evidence-based recommendations

3. Outline the expected benefits of the recommendations

As this is a group learning exercise, all students must be present for the duration of the scheduled Zoom session. You will need to make appropriate roster requests to ensure you are available.

Literature and references

In this assessment use at least 5 contemporary references (<5 years) for the individual written task, and at least 5 contemporary references (<5 years) for the group poster design task to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Midwives.

2 Portfolio

Assessment Title
Assessment 2 – Portfolio

Task Description

Type: Reflective Journals

Due date: 2355 (AEST) 2nd June 2023, Week 12

Weighting: 60%

Length: N/A. Each journal entry should be approximately 400 words however labour and birth reflections can be longer.

Unit Coordinator: Kelly Haynes

Aim

The aim of this assessment is to allow you to demonstrate reflective practice.

Reflective practice is a key element that contributes to the Nurses and Midwives’ Board of Australia’s Midwife Standards for Practice (2018). Through reflective processes, students and registered midwives can identify and explore diverse values, beliefs, learning needs, and sociocultural structures.

Instructions

To facilitate your reflective skill development, you are required to complete a reflective piece of writing for each of the three (3) recruited 'continuity of care experience' (COCE) women you recruited in term 1.

A reflective journal is a critical and analytical way of thinking about your clinical experience. It involves looking at a situation, assessing what you have learned from it, what you could have done differently, realising new approaches to your care, and ultimately, how you felt about the whole experience. As a student midwife, it shows how different aspects of your work interconnect and can be very useful for identifying gaps in knowledge and ethical dilemmas or situations that need further thought. Reflective writing is more personal than other kinds of academic writing and is an exploration of events, not just a description of them.

Please use the framework below to structure each reflective journal entry.

1. Description

What is it? What happened? Why am I talking about it?

2. Interpretation

What is important and relevant? Look through your description and try to find words or phrases that require further exploration. Include the rationale for what was done or why it was done. Where there is controversy about what was done or found, provide the rationale and sources of evidence for both sides of the argument. How can it be explored and explained using contemporary theories?

3. Outcome

What have I learned from this? How will it influence my future work?

Please note that you must use the template provided on the MDWF12003 Moodle page.

Requirements

    • Each COCE woman must have their own individual journal in Word Document format, which are to be uploaded as individual files to the relevant Moodle assessment page.
    • Each COCE woman must be de-identified within the journal.
    • Each journal entry in the portfolio must adhere to the template provided on the MDWF12003 Moodle page
    • Use a conventional and legible size 12 font, such as Times New Roman, with 2.0 line spacing and 2.54cm page margins (standard pre-set margin in Microsoft Word).
    • Include page numbers on the top right side of each page in a header.
    • You may write in the first-person perspective.
    • Use formal academic language.
    • Use the seventh edition American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style. The CQUniversity Academic Learning Centre has an online APA Referencing Style Guide

Literature and references

In this assessment there is no minimum requirement for number of references. Where references are used to support your discussion, they should be contemporary references (<5 years). You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Midwives or the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Resources

  • You can use unit provided materials and other credible sources (e.g. journal articles, books) to reference your argument. The quality and credibility of your sources are important.

Submission

Submit your assessment via the relevant Moodle assessment page.

Marking Criteria

Refer to the marking rubric on the Moodle site for more detail on how marks will be assigned.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
