Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Moodle student evaluation survey

Feedback

Comment was received that the unit content did not always align well with the assessment tasks.

Recommendation

The sequencing of unit content will be reviewed to optimize its alignment with the assessments set.

Feedback from Moodle student evaluation survey

Feedback

The written assignment tasks were considered to lack clarity and to contain ambiguity in what was required

Recommendation

The assessment tasks will be reviewed to ensure clarity in the descriptions of the task set. It will also be considered how guidance to students in how to approach the written assessments can be improved.

Feedback from Moodle student evaluation survey

Feedback

It was widely considered that the mandatory weekly discussion forum posts were too burdensome and time consuming.

Recommendation

The required frequency of discussion forum posts will be revised and it is likely that this will be reduced.

Objectives: This assessment relates to learning outcome one (1).

Unit Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the concepts that underpin the types of evidence informing current midwifery practice

Task Description

You are required to participate in an online group discussion via Moodle that will be directed by the Unit Coordinator. The online activities will require you to participate in a group discussion on set topics/questions posed in your study guide. Marks will be awarded for your online participation in the group discussion. Group discussion subjects will be set for study weeks 2, 4, 9 & 12.

Contribution to the online discussion is to add to the question being posed in the study guide and to contribute to the discussion generated by your colleagues. Simply stating ‘yes I agree with previous statements’ will not be considered to be contributing to the discussion.

Individual online submission is due by the Friday of the corresponding week at 11:45pm AEST.

2 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Written Essay

Task Description

MDWF 12004 – Critical Enquiry and Midwifery Practice

ASSESSMENT 2 – WRITTEN ESSAY

Weighting 30%

Word Count 1500 words (+/- 10%)

Due Date Friday 10th August (week 5)

Objectives This assessment relates to learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Unit Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify the concepts that underpin the types of evidence informing current midwifery practice.

2. Demonstrate the ability to analyse current evidence for best practice in midwifery

3. Critique current policy relevant to midwifery practice

4. Recommend appropriate midwifery care informed by current research and ethical decision making.

Assessment task:

Using Lesley Page’s “5 steps to evidence based midwifery,” you are required to write a script for a role play of how you would interact with the woman in one of the following scenarios to provide evidence based midwifery care.

Clinical scenarios (choose one)

1. Alison is a 32 year old woman, pregnant with her second baby, who is unsure about whether to have a caesarean or a vaginal birth. She is currently 26 weeks pregnant and she and her baby are well. Last time she had a caesarean section birth because her baby was in a breech position at term and the local hospital did not have any skilled caregivers who could offer her a vaginal breech birth.

2. 35 year old Lee is 40 weeks pregnant with her first baby, she and the baby are well. The local protocol is to book her in for an induction at 41 weeks. She is keen for a water birth, wants to avoid pharmacological pain management and does not want a medical or surgical induction.

See week 2 study guide for Page’s “5 steps to evidence based midwifery.”

The following role play script template may assist you.

Roles: 1 woman, 1 midwife

Step 1: asking what is important to the woman:

Midwife: Hello, [woman’s name], how are you today, may I ask if there is anything important to you that you would like to discuss?

Woman: Hello, yes there is, I would like to ask about… [Draw upon your chosen scenario]

Step 2: clinical history

Ask for her basic clinical/obstetric history [draw upon your chosen scenario]

Step 3: seeking the evidence

After the appointment you look for some evidence to answer her question. Outline here what you found after doing a search of local protocols and guidelines, as well as relevant literature.

Step 4: talking it through

Write a script of what information you would share with the woman to help facilitate an informed decision making process.

Step 5: reflection

Critically reflect upon the process

(Due to the nature of this assignment it is acceptable for you to write in the ‘first person’ perspective where appropriate).

· Recommend appropriate midwifery care informed by current research and ethical decision making.

Assessment Task:

You are required to:

1. Outline and evaluate the research evidence that relates to one aspect of normal midwifery clinical practice during labour and/or birth (for example: water immersion during labour, continuous support in labour, immediate skin to skin contact after birth)

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
