General Information

Overview

This unit introduces you to obstetric and non-gravid pelvic ultrasound. In this unit you will build upon your anatomical knowledge of the pelvis to include the anatomy of the gravid pelvis. You will study the sonographic appearance, techniques and procedures applicable to pathology of the non-gravid pelvis, including techniques for communicating your findings. You will be introduced to fetal development and the sonographic appearance of the gravid pelvis. You will identify family-centred care strategies employed in the care of the obstetric patient and the ethical, medico-legal and professional issues relevant to safe practice.

Attendance Requirements

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Students all did very well in the groupwork and marks were high. One exemplar of a previous groupwork was provided, along with a video explanation and written information. Despite this, there was some feedback that the task was not explained well enough. I will provide at least one additional exemplar of previous work for the next offering and edit the written information provided to students.

Textbook contains some errors

This text and workbook are used for the 3 O&G units and are quite good for the level the students are at. The workbook in particular is a good resource. Remove from required text list and to become a recommended reading item. Additional texts will be sought out to also go on the recommended reading list (library will be notified). More journal articles will be used throughout the term. This has also been discussed with other O&G unit coordinator.

2 Group Work

Group Work Assessment

Task Description

GROUP WORK ASSESSMENT (30% of unit total)

You will be allocated to a group by the unit coordinator for this assessment task. All students in your group will be enrolled at the same campus. Ideally groups will contain four students, but this will depend on enrolled numbers at each campus. A draft group allocation will be provided on 17 July (Monday of week 2). This will be subject to minor changes until census date on 1 August (Tuesday of week 4).

Together you will choose a topic related to the female reproductive system, from the below:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Post menopausal PV bleeding
  • Endometriosis

As a group you are to use communication and team work to perform relevant literature searches about your topic, collate, discuss and edit the information, and prepare an oral presentation to be recorded and submitted for marking. All group members are to be involved in both preparation and recording of the presentation. Your preparation phase (and individual marks) will utilise the Self and Peer Assessment evaluation tool (SPA) and your presentation phase (and group marks) will utilise computer generated slides with voice-over recording (eg Microsoft PowerPoint) as a minimum requirement.

The final slide/s of your presentation will contain your reference list.

Your target audience is your fellow MEDS12006 students. Keep this in mind as you prepare the oral presentation. Your objective is to teach student sonographers about your topic. Keep the presentation relevant to sonographic imaging and what a new sonographer will need to know.

This task is designed to give you experience in preparing and delivering an in-house lecture to fellow colleagues in your future career as a clinical sonographer, and as such, part of the assessment task is for your group to decide what content you will include. This will not be outlined for you any further than what is contained here.

In the medical field (in which sonography is included), journals use a numbered style of referencing for citing references. This can be Vancouver style, AMA, or other combinations. This often depends on the publication.

Hence for this unit the bibliographic style you are to use is APA referencing style (that means, you use APA style to show the author/publication details in your reference list) and IN ADDITION you are expected to use a reference number for your in-text citations.

INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT - 5% of unit total

You will be required to share the work of this assessment task equally between group members so that an even spread of input between group members is achieved.

Good planning (setting of meeting dates, deadlines), communication (determination of the best form/s of communication to suit all group members) and assignment of roles (plant, completer finisher, shaper, etc) will assist in the facilitation of this assessment item. Utilising the Belbin team roles and characteristics you learned about in year 1 may be advantageous. The Self and Peer Assessment tool (SPA), a web based system which integrates with Moodle, will be used so that you can both give and receive feedback on the teamwork task. Individual marks for group contribution will be allocated by your peers according to your level of input, equal sharing of workload plus your fulfillment to team commitments. SPA is simple and quick to use in a survey style format. This is to be done twice during the term: once at the midway point of the group-work task (week 6) and again at the completion of the task (week 10) thus giving you the opportunity to improve your team contribution performance between peer evaluations. Your mark for the individual component is derived from your peers. Group members assessments of their team mates' performance, based on a series of 10 standard questions, are averaged and this mark is transferred to the Moodle gradebook. Your own self assessment is excluded from the mark. As such there is no marking rubric for the individual component of this assessment.

GROUP COMPONENT - 25% of unit total

Group marks will be determined by the content and quality of the oral presentation submitted.

Content

  • Your target audience is your fellow MEDS12006 students. Keep this in mind as you decide on your content and prepare the oral presentation. Your objective is to teach student sonographers about your topic. Keep the presentation relevant to sonographic imaging and what a new sonographer will need to know.
  • Determine your key points or 'take home messages' and these will form the bulk of your content. Including the typical signs and symptoms, describing sonographic appearances, providing protocol guidelines and showing imaging examples would be suitable content. Additional background information such as aetiology, other diagnostic methods and treatments could form a small portion of your presentation but not at the expense of your key points.
  • This task is designed to give you experience in preparing and delivering an in-house lecture to fellow colleagues in your future career as a clinical sonographer. As such, part of the assessment criteria includes the group's decision on included content. Hence, no further guidance on content will be provided for this assessment item by the unit coordinator.

Quality

  • The quality of your presentation and recording includes the format in which you choose to record. Using a computer generated slide program with voice-over (eg Microsoft PowerPoint) is considered a minimum requirement.
  • More creative means of recording the presentation are encouraged as this will provide increased audience engagement and marks received.
  • It is important that the voice over can be heard clearly as this is how you deliver your content to your audience. Using a quiet room (such as can be booked at CQU libraries) and recording the presentation together as a group gives the best outcome and is most authentic.

The presentation will be a maximum of 10 minutes in duration and must include active roles by all group members.

The final slide/s of your presentation will contain your reference list. In-text citations will be required where necessary throughout the slide presentation, including for any images or diagrams used.
