Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Student feedback

Feedback

More practise time is needed for this unit

Recommendation

Unlike SSD1, which is a 12 credit unit and is held at a time when there are only 2nd years using the labs, SSD2 shares the labs with 2nd years Superficial Structures, and is a 6 credit unit. There is one lab per week that the students attend, and there are two non-compulsory practise sessions, one of them is manned. This enables the students to have two hours of practise time to their 40 mins of 1:1 lab time. We will review next year to see if we can extend the practise times at all, but this will depend on student numbers on all campuses, as availability of machines needs to be equal and fair. This also depends on whether there are limitations with lab times due to the campus being closed at certain hours.

Action

This term, the students had three addition days of unmanned practises - two public holidays that were specific to one state were used so the local campus had extra practise leading up to the public holiday and other campuses were open on the public holiday itself, and one day at the end of the first year res school for MEDS11001 was taken as an unmanned practise. Labs are still being shared in term 1 between the second and third years, so extra practises are not possible.

Feedback from Student feedback

Feedback

Unsure what marks can be deducted from ARC tools during the skills test assessment - more than just depth, focus, and gain - and more clarification about what is deemed an instant fail in the professional component

Recommendation

A complete form of where and how many marks can be lost for specific errors will be made available to students on the Moodle page. Reasons you may get an instant fail will also be expanded from the ARC tool. Tutors will all have an orientation before the start of term with further clarification to how to mark the ARC tools.

Action

Modifications to the ARC tool to include the addition of a complete list of areas where marks can be lost at the start of each ARC tool, and more details on each survey and image area to prompt the assessors while marking.

Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Apply the practical skills and critical thinking necessary to perform a sonographic examination of a transvaginal female pelvis, the lower extremity veins for DVT, and carotid ultrasound study

Term Specific Information

Unit coordinator for Term 1 2017 is Celia Tinetti. Celia can be reached at c.tinetti@cqu.edu.au or by phone on 03 9616 0528.

This is a non-graded, pass/fail unit. Please be aware the updated Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework) states: '4.21 In a pass/fail unit, students who fail a single assessment or who fail a pass/fail component of a graded unit will be deemed to have failed that unit.' The full documents for Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework) and Grades and Results Procedure can be accessed on the CQUni IMPortal http://policy.cqu.edu.au/Policy/policy_list.do.

Skills labs for this unit are mandatory. Labs missed for a valid reason require supporting documentation, and students are advised to contact the unit coordinator to organise time to make up for the missed scanning time when the lab is available for practise sessions. Any lab missed without valid reason or supporting documentation will warrant a demerit point. Please pay close attention to the lab schedule for this course. Students are required to adhere to the Program Dress code when using the ultrasound simulation labs and a zero-tolerance policy will be followed - both of these aspects are covered by the Professional Behaviour assessment and failure to comply will result in demerit points.

Important: You MUST be available all of week 12 for re-sits or to be a patient for the practical re-sits. Re-examinations for all practical assessments will take place in week 12.

Assessment Tasks

1 Practical Assessment

Assessment Title
Practical Assessment A - Transvaginal Female Pelvis Study

Task Description

This is a PASS/FAIL assessment. This assessment requires students to perform a transvaginal female pelvic exam, including professional (pre-scan, during, and post-scan) and technical (scanning) requirements that are discussed in the unit lab manual, instructed labs, lectures, and tutorials. These are outlined as follows:

Professional (pre-scan, during, and post-scan) requirements:

  • Apply patient care techniques and effective communication to obtain relevant patient history, informed consent, and to direct ‘patients’ accordingly
  • Apply professionalism in dealing with equipment and the scanning setting

Technical (scanning) requirements for the transvaginal female pelvis:

  • Students are required to perform routine sonographic scanning techniques, image optimisation, and acquisition, in a reasonable time period to advanced beginner level. A scanning time limit of 25 mins is applied to this assessment.

Students will be assessed using the ‘assessment of readiness for clinical’ (ARC) tool, which is available on the unit Moodle site.

To pass this assessment, both the professional and technical components must be graded as a ‘pass’. The components are graded separately so that if one is passed and the other is not, only the failed component must be repeated to pass. If the student has failed only the professional component, the full assessment will be repeated, but the student will only be marked on the professional component. There is only ONE opportunity to re-sit either component of the assessment item.

Please carefully review the assessment information and ARC tool posted on the unit Moodle site.

Assessment Due Date

SKILLS TEST: WEEK 3. Re-sits will be in Week 12.

Return Date to Students

Students will be given a pass/fail result within 7 working days. Individual marks will NOT be released to students.

Weighting
Pass/Fail

Minimum mark or grade

Assessment Criteria

The criteria to receive a ‘Pass’ are as follows:

A pass rate of 70% of available marks in both the technical and professional components and all bolded points in the professional component must be achieved in order to pass the assessment.

Re-evaluation options:

In the event that a student does not achieve a minimum of 70% or higher or fails one of the bolded items in the professional component of the ARC tool, they will be given ONE opportunity to re-sit the technical and/or professional components in week 12. These will be conducted by a different assessor to that of the first assessment for this module. If the student has failed only the professional component, the full assessment will be repeated, but the student will only be marked on the professional component.

Please be aware that all assessments will be video recorded for moderation purposes. The videos will not be released to students for review.

6 On-campus Activity

Assessment Title
Professional Behaviour Assesssment

Task Description

Professional behaviour is a critical part of any medical imaging profession, and encompasses the manner in which we treat our colleagues, patients, and the professional settings and equipment provided to us. The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that students from the medical sonography course are well-equipped to embody the high standards of professionalism that are expected from CQUniversity students while on their upcoming clinical placements. This assessment will require you to treat each of your lab sessions as a scheduled "work shift" and to exhibit high quality professional attributes to ensure you are prepared to enter the work force with the skills required to provide safe patient care and professional behaviour. As such, this assessment in based on continuous and ongoing assessment of student application and attendance during labs, and extending to professional behaviour throughout the unit. This includes participation in forums and online tutorials, labs, social media etiquette, phone calls, attitude towards peers and staff, and all official correspondence with university staff, peers, and community.

This is a PASS/FAIL assessment. This assessment is scored using a demerit point system - to pass this unit, a student can receive a MAXIMUM of three demerit points i.e. if a fourth demerit point is issued, the assessment will be graded as a fail. As this is a pass/fail unit, that means a FAIL for MEDS13002.

All interactions with staff and peers pertaining to this unit will be treated as a replica of the clinical work environment. You will be expected to demonstrate all of the professional behaviour that will be expected of you in a formal work environment. Demerit points can be issued in three different categories:

  1. Professional behaviour towards colleagues and staff,
  2. Professional behaviour towards patients, and
  3. Professional behaviour towards professional settings and equipment.

Expected behaviour and its relevance to the clinical environment is listed under the Professional Behaviour Assessment Outline on the unit Moodle site. You must review this information and be aware of what is expected of you for this unit. Please be aware that having your Formative Feedback Forms signed after your lab day by not bringing them to lab would have consequences in departments in a clinical setting and will warrant a demerit point. You will be required to fill out a Formative Feedback Form for each of your labs, but not for the dates of your practical skills tests as outlined in the lab manual. It is very important that you familiarise yourself with the CODE OF CONDUCT in the Lab Manual as well as the ASAR CODE OF CONDUCT and the CQU CODE OF CONDUCT. All of these documents are posted on the unit Moodle site for your information.

If unprofessional behaviour is reported by fellow classmates and not witnessed by a staff member, a written warning detailing the allegations will be issued to the student, and the student's response documented. If further evidence of an on-going unprofessional behaviour surfaces, then a demerit point may be issued.

Up to THREE demerit points can be issued before the assessment is graded as a FAIL. However, if any exhibited behaviour is deemed as UNSAFE for clinical practice, the professional behaviour assessment will be graded as a FAIL at the discretion of the unit coordinator.

Assessment Due Date

Due in week 12 with submission of completed lab manual.

Return Date to Students

A Pass/Fail grade will be uploaded to gradebooks within 7 working days of due date.

Weighting
Pass/Fail

Minimum mark or grade
LESS THAN four demerit points

Assessment Criteria

Pass/fail assessment.

When a demerit point is issued, it will be discussed between the student and either the on-site lecturer or the unit coordinator. Written documentation explaining the reason for the issued demerit will be signed by the on-site lecturer or the unit coordinator, and sent to the student via email.

A maximum of THREE demerit points can be obtained to pass this unit - any more than three and the assessment is graded as a FAIL.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
