General Information

Overview

This unit will introduce you to vascular ultrasound. In this unit you will explore the sonographic assessment of normal and pathological vascular cases. You will apply knowledge of vascular anatomy and physiology, and the physical properties of Doppler ultrasound to clinical scenarios and case studies to critically reflect on sonographic problems. Engaging in this sonographic decision-making process will culminate in the creation of sonographer’s interpretive reports, including a provisional diagnosis.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Class and Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Have your Say

Feedback

Some lectures were too long although the Unit Coordinator integrated a break slide for students to take a break.

Recommendation

All lectures longer than 40 minutes in length will be edited and split into 2 separate lectures.

Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Apply knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathological processes of the vascular system to sonographic examinations and sonographic image appearances
  2. Describe sonographic techniques and protocols appropriate to vascular ultrasound
  3. Analyse normal, anomalous and abnormal flow haemodynamics and laboratory findings to provide differential diagnosis and produce a provisional sonographic report
  4. Demonstrate professional collaboration with peers.

Recorded lectures are provided by Dr Afrooz Najafzadeh Abriz

This unit is a 6 credit point unit which requires you to allocate around 12 hours per week for study. The unit is graded. There are two assessment items. Please refer to the assessment information for more details.

Tutorials will be offered to discuss the course content and assessment preparation. You will be able to ask questions and gain feedback. They will be recorded for later viewing if you are unable to attend.

There are two break weeks: between weeks 4 & 5 - beginning Monday 7 December and between weeks 6 & 7 - beginning Friday 25 December.

Assessment Tasks

1 Group Work

Assessment Title
Group development of a Website

Task Description

You will be allocated to a group of 3-4 students to design and develop a website to inform the general public of a specific vascular condition. Your group will be allocated a specific vascular condition from the following:

1. Deep vein thrombosis
2. Carotid artery stenosis
3. Abdominal aortic aneurysm
4. Peripheral arterial disease.

This assessment task is to be completed in groups to allow you to experience what it is like working in a multi-disciplinary team in the professional environment. Groups will be allocated by the unit coordinator in the second week of term, but this may possibly change up to the end of week 4.

The website must contain five pages or tabs using the titles:

1. About us (10% Group mark)
2. Factsheet (25% Group mark)
3. Blogs (25% Individual component)
4. Identify, Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (ISBAR) video (25% Group mark)
5. References (5% Group mark)

A draft submission will be required in week 5 (Tuesday 15th December 13:00AEST) to allow you to obtain feedback before the final submission in week 9.

Marks are also given for:

1.Website layout (5% Group mark)

2.The Self and Peer Assessment (SPA) Survey's (5% Individual mark)

The first SPA survey to be submitted with the draft submission in week 5 and the second submitted with the final website submission in week 9. The average score of two surveys will determine the final SPA survey grade.

Assessment Due Date

Week 9 Friday (22 Jan 2021) 1:00 pm AEST

There are three components to this assessment: Part A: Draft website format submission-group component (Due date: week 5 Tuesday 15.12.20 at 1:00 p.m. AEST). Part B: Submission of link to the final website-group component with embedded individual component (Due date: week 9 Friday 22.01.2021 at 1:00 p.m. AEST). Part C SPA surveys x 2 - individual component (Due dates: week 5 Tuesday 15.12.20 1:00 p.m. AEST and week 9 Friday 22.01.20 1:00 p.m. AEST.)

Return Date to Students

Assessment Criteria

The website developed will be assessed on its creative engagement and ease of navigation for the audience, layout, communication style used, content and facts provided for the reader regarding the specific vascular condition and the referencing.

The ISBAR video should be of appropriate quality and have a clear purpose, with input from group members and sonographic content accurate and well explained.

Evidence based research should inform the individual blogs which should be written in a concise but cohesive manner.

A marking rubric is provided on the unit Moodle site.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
