Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Student feedback
Students liked the availability of collaborate tutorials
Continue collaborate tutorials
Zoom tutorials were introduced and well received.
Feedback from Student feedback
Students mentioned they would like to do case studies - but found it too much last year. Maybe trial quizzes that students can chose to do to test knowledge.
Trial case study quizzes
Trial case study quizzes were not undertaken this year.
Feedback from Industry feedback
Industry mentioned students need to have more university-based simulation practice with Obstetric cases.
Research into this area has indicated that there may be a computer-based resource students could use to help them with skills in obstetrics. I will look into this further and obtain costings.
Obstetric simulation options were found to be very expensive. This may be possible in the future but will require more discussion with the sonography team and completion of an application for funds.
- Apply the practical skills and critical thinking necessary to perform vascular, musculoskeletal and obstetric sonographic examinations under supervision.
- Perform diagnostic scans in specified areas to meet the ASA Competency Standards for the Entry Level Sonographer.
- Evaluate sonographic findings and formulate appropriate sonographic protocol to solve complex diagnostic problems.
- Critically reflect upon your professionalism, teamwork, communication skills and safe clinical practice.

Additional Textbook Information
There are no required textbooks.
Note: To assist you on clinical placement you will need access to textbooks previously purchased whilst studying the medical sonography course- particularly books purchased for any unit with the MEDS prefix.
These textbooks will be useful as they will enable you to revise sonographic pathophysiology, ultrasound physics, human anatomy and aspects of sonography practice. Clinical supervisors are encouraged to ask students questions about sonographic knowledge, skill and appropriate professional behaviour. They may ask you to research an aspect of sonographic practice related to a case seen on clinical placement. To do this well you will need your textbooks at hand.

12-06-2017 is a public holiday in NSW, QLD and SA. If placed in these states you can enter this as 8 hours on your clinical attendance form.
Assessment due dates fall outside the university term dates. All assessment items are due on Monday 19th June at 16:00 PM AEST. Any students who have negotiated to extend placement dates will be eligible to apply for assessment extensions by emailing the unit coordinator.
The unit coordinator is Anita Bowman. I can be contacted on a.bowman@cqu.edu.au or 07 4923 2244 or 0448 171261. Generally I am best contacted by email.
The clinical placement team is also an integral part of the staffing of this unit. They are Jane Wardle and the clinical placement officers, Vanessa Henderson and Kathleen Mossemenear.
This clinical unit builds on the sonographic knowledge, skills and attributes developed during MEDS13006 Medical sonography clinical course 2. You will perform medical diagnostic ultrasound examinations to meet many of the standards of the 'Australasian Sonographers Association Competency Guidelines for a Graduate Entry-Level Sonographer'. You will evaluate findings to formulate a differential diagnosis and suggest further investigation where appropriate. You will engage with your clinical supervisor in a critical appraisal of your professional behavior and you will apply appropriate professional and interpersonal skills to sonographic practice in accordance with Central Queensland University postgraduate attributes and requirements for external professional accreditation by Australian Sonographers Accreditation Registry.
There are no specified texts for this unit. However you are expected to revise previous unit content related to the pathological knowledge and practical skills of sonography. This includes content from the units obstetric, gynecology and vascular ultrasound and Sonographic Skills Development. To this end you must ensure that the texts for those units are available for you to consult whilst on placement. Clinical supervisors often assign 'homework' such as researching a clinical case seen that day - so be prepared with appropriate texts for support. You are expected to consult texts regularly to enhance your knowledge and understanding during this clinical unit.
This clinical unit starts four weeks before term 1 commences and consists of a 19 week (760 hour) clinical placement. The clinical placement dates are from Monday 6th February 2017 until Friday 16th June 2017 inclusive. You must attend your allocated clinical placement for the entirety of each working day, including the last day of placement, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed by both the unit coordinator and clinical supervisor. Please note that there are public holidays during your clinical placement. These can be entered as 8 hours on your clinical attendance form and do not need to be 'made up'. Please advise the unit coordinator if you need to extend your placement end date in order to complete course requirements. Any students who have negotiated to extend placement dates will be eligible to apply for assessment extensions by email to the unit coordinator. If you are experiencing difficulty meeting unit assessment requirements please contact the unit coordinator.
This is a pass / fail non-graded unit which means that you must pass each individual assessment in order to pass the unit.
Please note this important information from the University Assessment of Unitwork Procedures.3.2.6
This is a non-graded (pass/fail) unit. All work must be submitted by the due date, as there is no opportunity to apply a 5% penalty due to the pass/fail nature of the assessment tasks. A student who fails any assessment in a pass/fail unit or a pass/fail component of a graded unit will be deemed to have failed that unit.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University.
