General Information

Overview

Building on your knowledge from Language of Modern Music 1, you will further develop your skills and knowledge of the language of modern music as derived from both the western art-music tradition and contemporary popular music styles. You will study music theory elements covering introductory aspects of pitch, rhythm, pulse, tempo, articulation, harmony and expression. You will apply this knowledge in a range of activities applicable to this study.

Prerequisite: MUSC11405 Language of Modern Music 1

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Term Specific Information

All students are required to purchase a student Auralia/Musition cloud license. This license will give you access to the Auralia and Musition programs. These two programs will be used to facilitate the music theory and aural musicianship content and assessment for Language of Modern Music 2 (LOMM2). These programs are interconnected and can be used on any computer and/or other devices with internet. *If you have already purchased this software in Term 1, please check your purchase date range.

The cost of Auralia/Musition, is $59 for a 12 months access. To purchase this software, you must enter the software website through the designated link in the LOMM2 Moodle site. This will register you as a CQU Musition student. This is a cloud subscription, meaning you cannot sign up without going through Moodle. The instructions and details will be available on the Moodle site prior to term commencing. The Unit Coordinator will also email all students further instructions.

Music notation software:

It is strongly encouraged that students purchase the music notation software Sibelius to complete the assessments in this unit. Sibelius can be purchased in full or by annual subscription. 1 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Worksheet 1

Task Description

You are to re-create a score using Sibelius notation software. The score will be provided on the Moodle unit website.

Use your mouse and computer keyboard or step-time entry with a MIDI controller to re-create the score. Try and make your score look identical to the original, copying the correct amount of bars per line, the key signature and all markings (articulation, dynamics etc).

You will also need to focus on how the parts are presented (individual parts for each instrument). This may involve individually editing the layout of each part.

Assessment submission and presentation

You must submit:

  • Sibelius file (.sib)

  • Include your name and student number in the 'composer' section of the score.

Worksheet 2

Task Description

To complete this task, you must choose one of the pieces provided on the Assessment page on the moodle unit website and complete Parts 1 and 2 below:

Part 1 Harmonic Analysis

Using arrows and brackets and roman numerals, provide a harmonic analysis of the chord progression of your chosen piece. Write your answers on the lead sheet/score provided and make sure to include every chord. Upload your analysis as a PDF (.pdf).

Part 2 Melodic Analysis

Provide a melodic analysis of your chosen piece. Your analysis should include the following parts:

  • (Part A) Each note of the melody should be labelled to show its intervallic relationship to the harmony (example – 1, 5, b7, 9, 13). This can be done below the stave on the lead sheet/score provided and uploaded as a PDF (.pdf).

  • (Part B) An indication on the score where motives, conjunct, and disjunct motion and contours occur. This can be done above the stave on the same lead sheet/score as Part A and uploaded as a PDF (.pdf).

  • (Part C) A 250-500 word written analysis—accounting for each bar/measure of the melody—which accompanies and details any significant findings in your melodic analysis. This must include commentary on range, motion, contours, unity, and variety. Upload your written analysis as a Microsoft Word Document (.docx).

 

Assessment submission and presentation

You must submit:

  • A harmonic analysis as a PDF (.pdf).

  • A melodic analysis (including Part A and B) as a PDF (.pdf).

  • A 250-500 word written analysis as a Microsoft Word Document (.docx). Your written analysis must use 12 point Times New Roman font; must use 1.5 spacing for the body of the assignment; may use sub-headings to organise your assignment clearly; and must adhere to the CQUniversity APA Style Guide.

Task Description

Task Description: Auralia Ear Training Test.

This assessment will be completed online using Auralia Software, and will consist of aural-based questions relating to specified topics delivered in the program. Question topics may include, but are not limited to, the identification of intervals, scale, chords, and harmonic progressions.

The end-of-term test will be completed online using Auralia Software.
