Overview
In this unit you will study an overview of western art music styles that have emerged from the late Renaissance period through to the early 21st century. You will examine the role of prominent composers and performers as well as the social, political and technological events that have shaped western art music from the late Renaissance period through to the early 21st century. Your studies will give particular attention to the study and analysis of primary source materials in the form of musical analysis of the musical forms relevant to the various periods in western art music history.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

You are to write an analytical essay based on the following scenario:
You are the musical director for a showcasing of the Baroque artwork "Samson and Delilah" by Rubens (1610) in the Neoclassical Pavilion at Louveciennes (built in 1771 by Ledoux). You must select one appropriate musical work from the Classical era for the arrival of guests at the Pavilion and you must select one appropriate musical work from the Baroque era for the viewing of "Samson and Delilah".
Justify your choice by drawing comparisons between the respective Classical and Baroque music elements and the themes present within the architecture and the artwork. You must include a YouTube URL of your two chosen pieces in the body of the essay as well as the reference list.
Length: 1000 - 1500 words

This assessment will be conducted online as a moodle quiz. You will be required to write short answer responses to questions based on the music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. Your responses will be completed in the moodle quiz format. It is an open-book quiz and must be completed in two hours from the time you commence. This quiz will be available for 24 hours from the time of the due date and you may only attempt it once.

3 Written Assessment
You are to write an analytical essay based on the following scenario:
You are to showcase your broad understanding of neo-romantic and avant-garde music genres in the role of a film music critic. Choose two different films or television shows (one of each style below), from 1960 to the present day, that have original scoring (not adapted scoring) in the following styles:
- Neo-romantic
- Avant-garde (e.g. expressionist, serialist, minimalist etc)
You are to provide a YouTube URL (in the body of the essay and in the reference list) for each example, preferably directly from the film or episode. You must justify what genre your chosen film/TV scores belong to, through the analysis of the manipulation of music elements appropriate to each style/era. You must discuss how each score enhances the storyline of each motion picture/episode and what effect it has on the audience and the overall cinematic/television experience. You may focus on suggested film clips or choose your own (with confirmation from unit coordinator).
