General Information

Overview

In this second intermediate-level unit, together with your continued refinement of the process of integrating song, speech and movement, you will further synthesize your music theory, aural musicianship and piano keyboard for your development as a music theatre singer. As you further enhance your singing technique, you will explore the phonetic aspects of the Spanish and Singaporean languages through selected songs and vocal exercises. The unit integrates your learning of singing with music theory, aural musicianship and piano keyboard, covering intermediate concepts of pitch, harmony, rhythm, pulse, tempo, articulation and expression to extend your technical and artistic development.

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Term Specific Information

As the first of the third year advanced units, you will undertake activities that will integrate the various elements of your music theatre craft. At this level, a greater degree of insight and personal reflection, as evidenced through practice, is expected. You will continue to develop your skills in singing and character development through the intertwined possibilities and choices dictated by movement as a unified expression of characterisation. You will study detailed aspects vocal technique in your development as a music theatre singer with an advanced exploration of music theatre vocal repertoire. As part of your singing technique, you will explore the phonetic aspects of the German and Samoan languages in selected repertoire. Your technical skills will be extended through more advanced levels of music theory, including aspects of song-writing and arranging, aural musicianship and piano keyboard for your development as a music theatre singer.

Assessment Title
Practical Voice Assessment

Task Description

Technical Assessment:

#1 - Foreign-Language Song

You will perform a song from the Torres Strait Islands 'Sesere eeye'.

This piece involves body percussion and accompanying harmonies. This piece will be performed with all choreography and from memory, in a group context.

You may be allocated a melody or a harmony part. The assessment remains the same regardless of allocation.

Assessment:

Sing your designated part as part of a three part arrangement. Your aim is to accurately pronounce the Torres Strait Islander language and express the narrative of the storyline appropriately.

#2 - Technical Exercise – Sustaining a vocal harmony

You will be provided with a vocal arrangement of Sesere eeye, the foreign language piece you are studying.

You will be required to prepare one of two designated harmony parts.

Assessment:

Sing your designated part as part of a three part arrangement. Your aim is to maintain your allocated harmonic line throughout.

#3 – Folk Song - She Moved Through The Fair

The Irish Folk Song, ‘She Moved Through The Fair’, is to be sung unaccompanied. No starting note will be provided.

 All four verses must be sung from memory with careful attention being paid to rhythm, pitch, phrasing and lyrics. Vocal embellishments will be expected as per the folk style.

Assessment:

Sing 'She Moved Through The Fair' in full from memory. Your aim is to accurately interpret the style of the piece, express the emotion of the song appropriately, whilst maintaining pitch and rhythm.

Repertoire Assessment (Closed Exam):

You will be required to complete a practical singing assessment consisting of the following:

  • The program should demonstrate a choice of 4 works covering the different genres available throughout the history of 20th and 21st century music theatre with a total performance time of no longer than 18 minutes.
  • The genres to be represented are as follows:
  • - pre-1950s (including operetta)
  • - legitimate (Golden Era) 1950-1965 approx
  • - pre-2000s (MUST be composed by Stephen Sondheim)
  • - post-2000s (contemporary)
  • One piece must be a 'Song & Dance' with planned choreography throughout the performance
  • The program should show a variety of styles and tempos, and be sung entirely from memory.
  • The program is to be chosen in consultation with your teacher to ensure an appropriate level of difficulty is attempted.
  • Program notes for the performance exam must be submitted at the time of the vocal exam. These should include a song analysis of each piece, and a history of the work, composers and character. They should be a minimum of 200 words for each piece of music that you are performing.

Task Description

You will continue to develop intermediate Sight-Singing and Aural techniques through the application of Ensemble Singing with repertoire chosen in consultation with the class tutor.

Ensembles my be required to sing in parts and may be required to sing all parts of examination repertoire where requested.

Description:

You are to choose a music theatre song to analyse and study. You must annotate the score, highlight key manipulations of the music elements that help build the narrative and character/s of the respective show.
