Overview
This unit introduces you to the principles of patient safety and quality including physical/psychosocial assessment, asepsis and medication safety. You will have the opportunity to apply these principles in clinical environments. You will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice during the compulsory three (3) day residential school or timetabled internal nursing laboratories as well as 120 hour clinical placement.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Clinical placements. Some students initially felt that having placement in an Aged Care Facility would not enhance learning. Student reflections demonstrated that this was not the case as most students found the placement to be a valuable learning experience

1 Practical and Written Assessment
Assessment 1 has two (2) parts:
Part 1: You will be required to demonstrate your ability in a number of clinical skills in the last clinical on campus learning session for NURS11161 Clinical Nursing Practice 1. The assessment will require you to play the role of the nurse in a simulated environment and the assessment criteria will be the skills audit tool from your Clinical Skills text book.You will be required to document your clinical findings and to perform a clinical handover to your lecturer.
If you do not meet requirements, negotiations will occur to determine the further support and actions required.
Part 2: You will be required to achieve 100% in an online medication administration quiz using the Med+Safe software program in a computer laboratory in the last session of your residential school . If you score less than 100% in your first attempt, you will be provided with an additional two (2) opportunities to achieve a Pass. The second attempt will be before completing your residential school . The third attempt will be required to be completed by the Thursday before your scheduled clinical placement. If you are one of these students, you will need to contact the unit coordinator for guidance. If you are not successful on this third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will be a Fail for the unit.

You will be advised immediately following the practical assessment if remediation is required.
Skills that may be assessed include: hand hygiene, collection and documentation of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, oxygen saturation and auscultating breath sounds), aseptic technique and removal of sutures or staples.

2 Professional Practice Placement
If you receive an unsatisfactory result for your clinical placement assessment you will not be eligible for supplementary assessment and will receive a fail grade for NURS11161
NURS11161 Clinical Nursing Practice 1 involves 120 hours clinical placement. The clinical placement portfolio and time sheet must be completed during placement and the document is to be uploaded to Moodle within 7 days of completing placement.
Please note: You will receive ongoing feedback during your clinical placement as part of your formative assessment. This is to provide you with an opportunity for further development prior to your summative assessment at the end of your clinical placement. If you are not meeting satisfactory practice standards at any point of the placement, a support plan will be implemented in an effort to assist you to satisfactorily meet requirements. Unsatisfactory behaviours which jeopardise the safety of people in your care or that do not adhere with the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics, Professional Boundaries and/or Social Media Policy criteria may result in you being removed from placement. If you do not meet each standard at a satisfactory level you will be a fail for the unit.
A reflection on a learning opportunity that you completed during clinical placement should be uploaded with the clinical portfolio no later than 7 days post completion of placement. You may write in first person and referencing is not required as it is your thoughts and feelings that are being discussed. If you use a direct quote a reference will be required.
Word count is 1500 +/- 10% for your reflection. Marking criteria is below:
