Overview
In this unit, you will have the opportunity to practice fundamental nursing care in the clinical environment. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately to the older adult who is a deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment. You will review the concept of scope of practice using the Decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in a compulsory four (4) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 240-hour block professional experience placement in a clinical environment. This must be undertaken in a fulltime capacity. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community, and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have start and/or end dates that fall outside standard term dates. You must be physically and mentally well and meet the inherent requirements of the course to undertake this unit in the simulated and clinical environment. To be successful in this unit you must pass both assessment items.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Feedback collected from students, teaching staff and clinical placement hosts through Unit Coordinator contact sessions and communication with clinical facilitators.
Feedback from students undertaking six-week continuous clinical placements indicated a need for structured feedback earlier in the placement. Students reported that formal feedback at approximately Week 2, followed by another structured review later in the placement, would better support their learning, confidence and clinical skill development before the final summative assessment. Clinical facilitators also identified that the current assessment structure may delay recognition of learning needs or performance concerns, limiting opportunities for timely support and intervention. An inequity was also identified between placement structures. Students undertaking two separate three-week placements receive a formative and summative ANSAT during each placement, whereas students undertaking one continuous six-week placement receive only one formative ANSAT at Week 3 and one summative ANSAT at Week 6.
Revise the assessment structure for six-week continuous placements to include formative ANSATs at approximately Weeks 2 and 4, followed by the summative ANSAT at Week 6. This would enable earlier identification of learning needs, provide structured monitoring of student progress and improve consistency across placement models.
Feedback from Feedback collected from students and clinical facilitators, together with consideration of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). These frameworks emphasise safe, evidence-based practice, capability for practice and the early identification of learning needs.
Student and clinical facilitator feedback identified variation in students’ preparedness for higher-risk clinical activities, particularly intravenous medication administration. This may contribute to placement difficulties, delayed identification of support needs and potential risks within the clinical environment.
Introduce a mandatory Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assessing intravenous medication administration during Residential School Day 4, before students commence clinical placement. This would confirm baseline clinical readiness, enable early identification of students requiring additional support and allow targeted intervention before placement.
- Apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice in the physical and psychosocial assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of consumers, including those with cognitive impairment in the simulated and clinical environment
- Identify potential risks for the consumer, especially the elderly in clinical environments and determine strategies to minimise these risks
- Recognise and respond appropriately to the deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment
- Develop strategies for self-care when managing decline in cognition in the older person with delirium and/or dementia
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe supply and administration of parenteral and non-parenteral medication.

Congratulations on completing this unit. Don’t forget to check your unit enrolments for next term.
NURS29004 includes a mandatory four-day Residential School from 31 October 2026 - 2 November 2026, designed to consolidate clinical reasoning, practical skills, and professional judgement through immersive and applied learning experiences.
The Residential School provides an opportunity to translate your prior learning into practice within a Simulation Laboratory environment, with a strong focus on integration, performance, and structured feedback to support your development.
As this unit is delivered online with a Residential School component, you are expected to take responsibility for your own learning by developing and following an individual study plan. This includes engaging in self-directed and self-regulated learning throughout the term.
As this unit is offered in Mixed mode, students are asked to prepare their own individual study plan to undertake self-led and self-directed study throughout the term. A key to your success is a strategic self-directed approach to learning and regular contact with your Unit Coordinator/s. Please check the Announcements and Discussion forums at least twice a week – there will be regular announcements about assessments and unit resources throughout the term and reviewing this information is essential to unit knowledge and your success. CQUniversity communicates with students through CQUniversity email. We recommend that you access your CQUniversity email at least twice a week so that you do not miss vital information about your studies.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
