In-Class test 

TASK DESCRIPTION

You will complete two written In-class tests during allocated lecture time.

The first test will be conducted Monday 9th August 2021 in Week 5 during lecture time. The first test will cover learning material in weeks 1-4 and is worth 20% of your final grade.

The second test will be conducted Tuesday 5th October 2021 in Week 12 during lecture time. The second test will cover learning material in weeks 5-11 and is worth 30% of your final grade.

Both tests will include both short and longer short paragraph questions.

General Information

Overview

This unit builds on your knowledge of anatomy from ORAL11004 Oral Anatomy 1 and supports your study of oral pathology in ORAL11003 Oral Pathology and Diagnosis. In the first half of this unit you will continue the study of anatomy and physiology of the head, neck and oral cavity with an emphasis of the clinical applications of this knowledge. In the second half of this unit you will study embryology and microscopic anatomy of structures within the oral cavity. With this unit you will develop the foundation knowledge required to administer local anaesthesia and conduct an extra-oral and intra-oral examination in oral health therapy practice.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Condition: Students must be enrolled full-time in CB29 Oral Health Course to enrol in this unit.  Prerequisite are: BIOH11005 and ORAL11004.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Student evaluations

Feedback

Students responded positively to the weekly practice quizzes. Students said that weekly quizzes helped them to, keep on track, test their understanding after a lecture, refresh their knowledge and demonstrate what subjects they knew and what they need to do more study on.

Recommendation

Weekly quizzes, which help students revise content and prepare for the online quizzes, will remain as part of this unit. The question bank will be updated and modified with additional feedback and revised questions for 2021.

Feedback from Student evaluations

Feedback

Students enjoyed the group activities in the anatomy labs. Students said the anatomy sessions helped consolidate what they learnt in lectures and that they enjoyed the shared learning experience with their peers. Students also said that participation in the anatomy laboratory sessions helped prepare them for the station-based anatomy test. However, not all students actively participated in the group discussions which meant that some students missed the opportunity for shared learning and felt unsure of how to complete the workbook questions.

Recommendation

Anatomy laboratory sessions, including practical activities with anatomical models, radiographs and local anaesthetic simulation, will remain in 2021.The sessions will be modified to encourage more group discussions. The sessions will follow outlines given in the workbook Time will be set aside at the end of each session to clear any doubt on completion of the workbook.

Feedback from Student evaluations

Feedback

While tutorial sessions were scheduled on ZOOM and students participated by answering prepared questions, they didn’t feel that the sessions were beneficial as the same few students answered all the questions all the time. Students felt that these sessions would be more beneficial in face-to-face with equal contribution from all students.

Recommendation

Tutorial sessions in 2021 have been scheduled as face-to-face delivery. The tutorials, which will follow the face-to-face lecture, will be held in suitable teaching space for group and class discussions. This will enable different learning experiences instead of a question and answer type session.

Feedback from Student evaluations

Feedback

Students like to print out the lecture slides for revision, but find some of the slide presentations very long and expensive to print out.

Recommendation

The power point presentations will continue to be made available on Moodle but modified in consideration of the amount of paper required and cost of printing.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe anatomical and radiographic features of the head and neck with particular relevance to dental anaesthesia and patient examination
  2. Describe anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity with emphasis on innervation of oral structures, spread of infection, function of the temporomandibular joint and salivary glands
  3. Describe the embryological development of the teeth and oral cavity, and the microscopic anatomy of oral structures
  4. Demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours as required of an Oral Health Therapist.

The learning outcomes of this unit are part of the overall learning outcomes in the BOralHlth course at CQUniversity. They will form part of the annual report documentation which is submitted to the Australian Dental Council for accreditation.

Assessment Title
Multistation anatomy test

Task Description

In clinical practice, oral health therapists are expected to have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the anatomical structures and functions of the head and neck ,teeth and oral cavity. In preparation you will take part in practical learning activities with anatomical models, teeth models, and radiographs, as well as take part in practical activities. The multistation anatomy test is worth 25% of your overall mark. It consists of one in-class test which will take place in week 12.

The test consists of approximately 35 numbered stations and will take approximately 90 minutes in duration. Stations will include anatomical models, teeth, charts, photographs and radiographs. You will be asked to correctly name, identify, describe the function, and estimate the age of a dentition. Some stations will require you to demonstrate a practical task and answer a question verbally.
