General Information

Overview

There is an enormous body of health data and information that is relevant to public health and the ability to locate, interpret and communicate health information is a fundamental skillset required by all public health professionals. In this unit you will be introduced to the concepts of measurement and data relating to public health. You will explore potential sources of data, how to identify and interpret appropriate measurements and data for public health, and how to communicate measurements and data with confidence to inform public health decisions.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Group Discussion

Task Description

Each week as part of the course learning materials, students are asked to contribute to discussions or activities using online forums. Students' contributions and interactions withe their colleagues will be assessed. This assessment is worth 20% of the overall grade.


Assessment Due Date

Contributions for consideration must be posted by 5pm, Friday 6 October.

Students will be advised of their final contribution grade by Friday 19 October

Assessment Criteria

Students will be assessed on the quality of their input to forum discussion activities across the semester. Contributions will be assessed on the following criteria:

1. Comprehension and understanding of the topic

2. Relevance

3. Critical thinking and depth

4. Quality of expression

5. Engagement and interaction with colleagues

For each criteria, students will be given a grade ranging from 0 (poor), 2 (sufficient), to 4 (outstanding).

At the start of week 6 students will be given an indicative grade of their contributions to discussion activities and feedback to improve their performance where appropriate.

Assessment Title
Online Quiz

Task Description

The quiz is a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions that will test your understanding of the core concepts for the unit covered in weeks 1 - 6. You will be allowed one attempt at the quiz and will have 2 hours to complete it once it has been opened. The questions for each student will be drawn randomly from a pool of questions.

Students will complete the quiz in Moodle.

3 Presentation and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Written Assessment

Task Description

There are two parts to your written assessment. The first is a report and the second is a reflective essay.

Report: The report is worth 30% of your overall grade. It should be 2000 words long and include data visualisation. It will draw on appropriate sources to outline the impact of a particular health outcome or behaviour over the last 20 years in Australia. You should use devices, such as headings and subheadings, where appropriate to guide your reader. Suggested topics include:

1. Gambling

2. HIV

3. Suicide

You can discuss your topic, and how you might like to approach it during the tutorials.

Reflective Essay: The reflective essay is worth 20% of your overall grade. It should be between 1000 and 1500 words long. We will discuss reflective essays, and how to achieve a critical approach in your tutorials. There will be weekly prompts to guide you on aspects of the course that you may care to reflect on. Your essay use a thesis statment that brings together your reflections from throughout the term in a cohesive way.


Assessment Due Date

The reflective essay is due Monday 9 October at 5pm. The report is due Monday 16 October at 5pm.


Return Date to Students

Each assessment piece will be returned 2 weeks after submission.
