Overview
This unit will allow you to develop an understanding of the processes and theoretical underpinnings required to integrate evidence-based practice with clinical expertise to improve patient care. In addition, you will be able to formulate a clinical question, assimilate the basic principles and skills required to undertake literature searches of evidence-based resources, and interpret data and research findings relevant to the prehospital environment to inform practice.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Written Assessment
You will demonstrate your knowledge of the processes and theoretical underpinnings required to integrate best practice with clinical expertise and patient care, formulate clinical questions and assimilate the basic principles and skills required to undertake literature searches of evidence-based resources. This will be conducted through varying tasks within a workbook and will involve a mixture of long and short answer responses, research, and reviews. The workbook will have points awarded to each task with the accumulation of these points being the result.
You must follow the workbook instructions and all its tasks must be completed in the spaces provided within the workbook.
The workbook will be available on the unit’s Moodle page.

2 Annotated bibliography
This assessment item will develop your skills in evidence-based research. It requires you to write annotated bibliographies on five (5) scientific journal articles along with a critical summary that will answer your clinical question. Along with the annotated bibliography, you will include the methodology that describes how you searched for the articles.
Clinical Question: Using PICO, design a clinical question. Search the literature for journal articles related to your clinical question. Make notes on the process for your search as this will form your methodology. You may find many articles related to your topic however select only the most relevant and most recent five (5) for your annotated bibliography and critical summary. Each bibliographic annotation will be 200-250 words.
- Title: A title that is pertinent to what is discussed in the assessment and reflects the Clinical question
- Keywords: A minimum of four (4) keywords: Keywords reflect the clinical question and were used for your literature search
- Clinical Question: A valid clinical question that can be researched.
- Methodology: Describe the methodology you used to perform your literature search. Aspects that need to be covered include the databases searched, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the search terms used.
- Bibliography: Each of the five (5) referenced articles collected through the literature search are presented individually in Harvard referencing and include the quality of the journal/impact factor, OR the number of citations the article has attracted, the credibility of the author(s) - author(s) affiliation(s) and a summary consolidating the key findings (annotating the bibliography).
- Critical Summary: A critical summary of the literature findings, answering your clinical question.
- References: Any additional references will need to be referenced at the end of the document however the five (5) annotated bibliographic references do not need to be referenced at the end of the manuscript.
PDF Copies of the five (5) selected articles: When you upload your annotated bibliography to Moodle for submission, you will also need to include the 5 articles as separate PDFs. The PDFs are to be identified by the first author and the year of publication e.g Davis 2020

The annotated bibliography will be assessed in accordance with the rubric and information provided on the unit’s Moodle page. The following criteria are key points to be included:
• The written assessment should be presented in an essay format.
• The written assessment must address each of the main topic tasks as detailed in the task description.
• Avoid superficial points or comments and be clear and concise.
• As this is a written assessment, you must include in-text referencing as required and a reference list for additional references.
There is a word limit of 2000 words (+/- 10%).
This assessment is worth 40% of your overall unit mark.
