Overview
This unit will be divided into two main components: pharmacotherapeutics and anaesthesia specific to podiatry practice. In pharmacotherapeutics the student will gain understanding of S2, S3, S4 and S8 medicines administered in common diseases seen in podiatry practice and learn further of their role in management of disease. In anaesthesia, the student will gain advanced knowledge of anaesthetics pertinent to podiatry practice. Topics covered will include pre-surgical history and physical assessment, informed consent, charting, maximum safe dose, and injection instrumentation. Students will also begin to practice injection technique in a simulated setting.

Prerequisite: PODI13007 Clinical Practice 2 - and Corequisite: PODI13011 Clinical Practice 3
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Feedback from Staff feedback and in-class student feedback
Time allocation for practical sessions was sufficient which allowed for thorough demonstrations and student practice time, leading to increased student confidence with performing relevant podiatric specific practical skills.
In future deliveries of this unit, sufficient practical time should continue to be set aside for thorough demonstration and ample student practice time of relevant podiatric specific practical skills.
Feedback from Self reflection and peer review
Student performance in the written assessment task would likely have increased had they submitted a draft of their written assessment for review before submission.
Staff should continue to inform students that they can submit a draft for review by teaching staff before the due date of the written assessment task.

The use of simulated learning within this unit enabled students to be able to safely and confidently practice relevant podiatric specific skills before being exposed to real patients in this context.
Simulated learning is an important aspect in this unit and as such should continue to be implemented.

- Examine legal, ethical and professional responsibilities associated with prescription and administration of medications within podiatry.
- Students will use the basic pharmacology of anaesthetic drugs as taught previously.
- Develop an anaesthetic plan based on a physical examination that includes: appropriate drug selection; correct dose calculation; appropriate method of drug administration; and other supportive care.
- Integrate an evidence based approach in pharmacological practice within podiatry.

This unit will be delivered by two casual lecturers. Elyssa Wiecek will teach the pharmacy component and Damian Lafferty will teach the podiatric surgery component.
1 Practical and Written Assessment
This practical and written assessment is made up of two parts.
Part one (practical component): students will be required to attend the practical safe injection administration practical in week 6 and will be assessed as competent or not competent in week 7.
Part two (written component): students will be required to submit a case study relating to practical safe administration of local anaesthesia.

2 Written Assessment
Students will be required to submit a written assessment in the form of an essay pertinent to the use of advanced pharmacology in podiatry practice. This assessment task will allow an in-depth exploration of a particular podiatric condition of choice concerning pharmacological management using multiple sources of evidence. Further details regarding this assessment task will be provided in Moodle in the early weeks of the term.

Note: APA referencing system is used for all written assessments. In-text citations are counted as part of the word count for assessment purposes. Penalties will be applied where those strict word limits are exceeded (+/- 10%). If the assessment item exceeds 10%, the content will not be assessed by the examiner (excludes tables, appendices and references where applicable). If you are late submitting your assignment – each day incurs a 5% penalty.
