Overview
In this unit, you will implement podiatric surgical techniques required to perform safe and competent nail surgery. Specific emphasis is placed on surgical principles, expanding and reinforcing your understanding and practice of infection control and clinical and theatre protocols. You will gain knowledge and skills in surgical management and learn the theory behind a range of surgical procedures relevant to podiatric practice. The scope of podiatric surgery practice is explored with consideration of the ethical and medico-legal implications.

Prerequisites: PODI13011 Podiatry Clinical Practice 3 and PODI13015 Advanced Pharmacology in Podiatry Practice and Corequisite: PODI14008 Podiatry Clinical Practice 4
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. 1 In-class Test(s)
You will be required to attend campus to demonstrate your knowledge and safety of Local Anaesthesia in the form of a closed-book, in-class test. This is an unweighted Pass/Fail assessment item which requires a grade of 100% to pass.
Students who do not pass their first attempt will be eligible for one re-attempt which will be held on Monday 9am in week 4.
Students who do not pass this assessment item are not eligible to attend practicums or Work Integrated Learning for this unit, therefore will not be able to pass the unit.
This test will be examining your knowledge of all presented learning material from week 1. You will specifically be examined on the 'Local Anaesthesia Safety' Lecture and Local Anaesthesia Calculations. More information regarding this assessment task will be made available to you on the PODI14014 Moodle site.
Week 3 Tuesday (25 Mar 2025) 9:00 am AEST
You are to attend your usual tutorial room at your usual time. You are to arrive at least 10 minutes early to ensure prompt commencement of this assessment.
Week 3 Wednesday (26 Mar 2025)
Students will be notified of the outcome of their LA safety test by Wednesday of Week 3. Students who sit a re-attempt of the LA safety test will be notified of the outcome of the assessment by close of business on Monday Week 4.
Students will be marked according to an answer sheet specific to this assessment item.
- Evaluate the indications, contraindications, and risks, including adverse reactions and medicolegal implications, of surgical procedures and administration of local anaesthesia conducted by podiatrists.
2 Professional Practice Placement
You will be required to attend campus for three (3) days of compulsory Professional Practice Placement. Two days of this placement will be facilitated by a podiatric surgeon, and you will be provided with the opportunity to develop your surgical podiatry skills to ensure you are meeting safety expectations. Students must pass all areas of their surgical clinic logbook in order to pass the unit. More information regarding this assessment item will be made available to you on the PODI14014 Moodle site.
Students who don't attend their practicum day in week 5 will not be able to attend their Professional Practice Placement.
Students who don't pass Assessment 1 (in-class test, 0%) will not be able to attend their Professional Practice Placement.
Week 8 Friday (9 May 2025) 11:59 pm AEST
Students will be required to participate and pass their Surgery Professional Pracetice Placement on 7/5/25, 8/5/25 and 9/5/25.
Week 10 Friday (23 May 2025)

You will be assessed against a specifically designed marking rubric for this assessment. The Podiatric Surgeon, together with the Podiatry Clinical Supervisor or Unit Coordinator, will be assessing your proficiency in this unit.
- Demonstrate advanced professional and ethical behaviour including the use of effective communication skills and reporting related to surgery in podiatry practice.
- Perform nail surgery safely and competently including postoperative management and related patient education.
3 Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)
For this assessment task, you will be required to undertake an Objective Structured Clinical Examination to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and competency relating to surgical procedures in podiatry practice. More details regarding this assessment task will be made available to you on the PODI14014 Moodle site. You will be required to attend on-campus for this assessment.
Review/Exam Week Friday (13 June 2025) 9:00 am AEST
The OSCE will occur at the CQUniversity Health Clinic.
Feedback will be provided within two weeks following the OSCE.
This assessment task will be marked against a specifically developed marking rubric reflective of the clinical scenarios presented.

You will be required to attend campus to demonstrate your knowledge of surgical podiatry in the form of a closed-book, in-class test. This test will be examining your knowledge of all presented learning material from weeks 1-12. Exam Week Tuesday (17 June 2025) 9:00 am AEST
You are to attend campus to complete this in-class test. The test location will be advised by the unit coordinator early in the term. You are to arrive at least 10 minutes early to ensure prompt commencement of this assessment.
Feedback will be provided within two weeks following the in-class test.
You will be marked against a specifically developed marking rubric for this assessment task.
