Overview
In this unit students will develop knowledge and skills relating to the comprehensive management of clients with acute and chronic cardiorespiratory conditions across the spectrum of health care. Students will use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, apply principles of Evidence Based Practice and combine various clinical reasoning strategies. Students will relate the role of the physiotherapist working in a hospital and community care facilities to that of the interprofessional team, family members and carers of clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.

Prerequisites:- PSIO11003 - Foundations of Physiotherapy Practice 2 ALLH11004 - Anatomy and Physiology for Health Professionals 2
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). More frequent visits from Unit Coordinator to the other campus throughout term. Not having Cardiorespiratory specific staff on both campuses students felt that they were being disadvantaged.
Unit Coordinator will attempt to make a minimum of 2 visits throughout term to the other campus to assist with teaching and engage with the students.

Resources and readings - some were too long and students struggled to complete these weekly. Students found the e-modules very helpful and these should continue.
A review of all readings and resources will be completed prior to the unit commencing in 2017.

Tutorials - students enjoyed the case studies, however felt that they needed more time to practice practical skills and felt that they didn't really get much guidance throughout the case studies from staff if they were on the right track or not. Potentially include some video's of the assessment and treatment techniques for revision purposes.
A review of the tutorial structure and case study length will be completed prior to the unit commencing in 2017.

Assessment items - majority of students felt that they were fair and a good learning experience. Some students reported that they really enjoyed and learnt a lot from the group assignment topics. Some felt that the Practical Exam could be spilt into 2 and one completed earlier in term to consolidate learning taught in the first half of the term. The timing of assessments with majority of them being held in week 12 or exam block student reported that this didn't give them much time to revise with staff assistance.
A review of the timing and structure of assessment items will be completed prior to the unit commencing in 2017.

- Develop, implement and evaluate interventions for clients with cardiorespiratory conditions from acute to chronic stages.
- Discuss intervention strategies using appropriate evidence from the literature.
- Relate the role of the physiotherapist to that of the interprofessional team, family members and carers of clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.

1 Online Quiz(zes)
There will be two Quizzes during the unit that will include a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions.
- Quiz 1 will take place in Week 5. It will account for 15% of the unit grade and will assess content covered during Weeks 1-4.
- Quiz 2 will take place in Week 12. It will account for 15% of the unit grade and will assess content covered during Weeks 1-12.
Both quizzes will consist of up to 30 questions, and will have a time limit of 60 minutes. Questions will be randomly
generated from a question bank, so that the quizzes will appear differently for each student. Access to books, notes,
websites (other than the quiz) and use of other electronic devices are prohibited during the quiz.
The quizzes will consist of some or all of these categories:
- Multiple choice questions.
- Fill in the missing word(s) questions.
- Short answer questions.

2 Group Work
Students will work in small groups and develop a presentation appraising a cardiorespiratory specific treatment technique relevant to a chosen cardiorespiratory condition.
The presentation should include the pathophysiology of the condition, explain the cardiorespiratory specific technique and an appraisal of the technique using the literature specific to the condition. Each presentation should be 15 minutes in length and will be followed by 5 minutes of question time.
Students will be allocated to groups by the end of week 3, and the presentations will be held during class time in week 12.

3 On-campus Activity
85% attendance requirement for tutorial and practical sessions
At least 85% attendance of tutorial sessions is required for a PASS grade. If there is a genuine reason for being absent, students need to inform the Unit Coordinator as soon as possible.
A minimum attendance requirement of 85% is recommended from the Australian Physiotherapy Council for all tutorials and practical sessions. The monitoring of attendance will take into consideration legitimate reasons for absence, such as those outlined in the Assessment of Coursework Procedures (1.21.1 and 1.21.3), and these will not be counted as absence for the purpose of this attendance requirement.
Clinical observations
Students are required to conduct 10 hours of clinical observations relevant to cardio-respiratory physiotherapy.
E-learning modules
Students are required to complete an e-learning modules relevant to Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, certificates gained at the completion of the modules are required to be submitted to moodle by midnight Friday 30th September week 11.

4 Practical Assessment
The Practical Assessment will be in the form of an OSCE which will be based on case scenarios (simulated patients), and students will perform and discuss aspects of relevant assessment, treatment and overall management of the condition presented.
The Practical Assessment will last for approximately 30 minutes, and will be video and audio-recorded for moderation purposes. Students should be prepared to model for other examinees after completing their own assessment and students from other year groups may also act as models during the assessment as required.

The Practical Assessment will take place during the exam Week. An individual assessment timetable will be published prior to the end of Term 2.
Results and feedback will become available within two weeks of the assessment.
