Overview
Within this clinical placement unit, you will develop your clinical reasoning abilities and practice ethical and professional behaviours. You will achieve this by integrating and using your current knowledge, physical skills and principles of evidence-based practice to function competently to a level of a graduate physiotherapist. The clinical placement associated with this unit will differ from other clinical placement units. It will allow you to develop specific skills within one of the many physiotherapy clinical areas of expertise, across a variety of settings and patient demographics, with an emphasis on effective and patient-centred management plans, within the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Feedback from Emails, verbal feedback from Students and Educators
Do to COVID-19 the pre-placement simulation block was cancelled in 2020. Student results and preparation were affected.
It is recommended that the simulation block recommences in 2021 prior to the students commencing clinical placements.

There needs to be transparency between the APP and the grade for the clinical placement.
It is recommended that the Unit Coordinator continues the pre-placement briefing sessions in 2021 and that they return to face to face. The unit coordinator will attempt to include more detail and examples for the students to understand the process.

Clinical Placements run throughout the year from late January to early December, some may occur outside of term times. Students may be required to travel outside of their home town to complete clinical placements. The allocation of student placements is in accordance with requirements set by the Physiotherapy Board of Australia and will be allocated by the Physiotherapy Clinical Educator Coordinator. Students will be notified of their clinical placement allocation once they have met all pre-requisites for Professional Physiotherapy Practice 1.
1 On-campus Activity
Simulation will run during the university break between terms 1 and 2 specifically for the third year physiotherapy students. You will be required to attend all timetabled sessions. Simulation will be run over 3 weeks, with 2 days per week timetabled per campus. You will complete simulation for the core clinical areas of physiotherapy - Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy.
You will be notified of the simulation timetable and requirements prior to the completion of the term 1 examination period. Attendance is compulsory and you will be required to complete reflective tasks throughout the simulation sessions. You will be notified of the date and time of this session prior to the completion of term 1. The briefing session may be held prior to term 2 teaching weeks to allow sufficient preparation time prior to the commencement of clinical placements in term 2.
Completion of simulation
You will be notified at the completion of simulation if you have not met the pass criteria for this assessment item.
This assessment item is pass/fail. You will be assessed on both your attendance and the completion of reflective tasks throughout the simulation sessions. You will be required to submit your workbooks to the clinical supervisors at the completion of each core area of simulation.
If you are unable to attend a session due to medical reasons, a medical certificate will be required as proof that you were unable to complete simulation due to medical reasons.

2 Professional Practice Placement
You will complete a 5 week full-time clinical placement as allocated by the unit coordinator. This clinical placement can be in any area of physiotherapy and may be located in any facility ranging from acute hospitals to community programs. The grade awarded is based on your performance during the 5 week clinical placement and evaluated using the Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice (APP) via the APPLink-up.
Week 12 Friday (8 Oct 2021) 5:00 pm AEST
At the completion of the clinical placement from your Clinical Educator.
In order to pass the Clinical Placement you need to meet the "Adequate" level on the Global Rating Score and achieve the following on the APP, as graded by your Clinical Educator:
1. A minimum total score of 49.5% for the combined domains of Professional Behaviour and Communication AND
2. A minimum total score of 49.5% for the combined domains of Assessment, Analysis and Planning, Intervention, Evidence Based Practice and Risk Management.
If you don't meet the above criteria for the Clinical Placement you will be eligible to sit a Clinical Exam, provided you have achieved a total score equal to, or higher than 44.5% for your clinical placement. The Clinical Exam is in the format of an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) that will be completed on a real or simulated patient within the area that you completed the clinical placement. The Clinical Exam will be assessed by two clinical educators, one or more will be a CQUniversity Physiotherapy academic. The exam will run for approximately 60 minutes and will be assessed on a modified APP.
The Clinical Exam is the equivalent of a supplementary assessment for the Professional Physiotherapy Practice units. You will only be given one opportunity at a Clinical Exam per clinical placement.
If you complete and pass the Clinical Exam you will only receive exactly 50% for your Clinical Placement grade. If you complete and fail the Clinical Exam, or receive <44.5% on your original APP, you will receive your original APP score as given at the completion of your clinical placement and you will be required to repeat the Unit at a subsequent offering.

3 Reflective Practice Assignment
Write a reflective essay based on your first clinical placement. Select and critically appraise a topic that you found to be most challenging.
Select one of the following:
· Rapport development;
· Communication;
· Prescription of home exercise programs;
· Working within the MDT;
· Reflective Practice;
· Patient adherence and compliance.
To reflect effectively, you will need to consider your actions and level of engagement throughout your 5-week clinical placement. Ensure that you include critical appraisal of the published literature (i.e. theories and practices) that may help to support your reflective learning.

End of Term
Detailed marking criteria will be available on the unit moodle site, and will be based on the following:
- Presentation (30%)
- Reflection (40%)
- Literature to support the theories and practices (30%)
The report should be a maximum of 1250 words. The assignment must be within 1150-1250 words. Failure to meet this requirement will incur a 5% penalty off the initial mark for this assignment.
