Overview

This unit will enable students to build on previous learning, to plan and conduct a supervised research project in the form of a primary study, a systematic literature review, or a service improvement project. The project will be presented in the form of a manuscript for a relevant peer-reviewed journal.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

In order to facilitate maximum time working on your research project with your supervisor we require you to select your groups and potential research topics prior to the start of Term 1 (11th March, 2019). Please check your University email for notifications and updates on time specific details.

Your group and your supervisor will need to select an appropriate Journal for future publication of the research project's results. The referencing format required by the Journal's author instructions will be the one utilised for the written assessment.

1 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Written Assessment (60%)

Task Description

The written assessment will take the form of one of the following options as determined by the project supervisor who will be a member of the Academic Staff.

1. Systematic Review of the literature on a predetermined topic. A "PROSPERO" registration will need to be considered and discussed with your principal supervisor for this research project. 

2. Research project involving data collection, statistical analysis, and write-up on a predetermined topic. An Ethics Application will need to be considered and discussed with your principal supervisor for this research project.

You will work in groups to prepare a written manuscript for publication in a scientific journal. The formatting and referencing requirements for your manuscript will reflect the author instructions for the chosen journal. The journal will be selected in consultation with the principle supervisor. A PDF of the author guidelines must be submitted with your manuscript. 

As this is a multi-term unit all assessment items are deferred, with due dates in Term 2. The Written Assessment is due Friday 20th September 2019 at 4:30pm. A timetable will be developed closer to the date.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment rubric for this task is based on the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. This quality framework is mapped against the CQUniversity Graduate Attributes and intended to give a holistic understanding of standards expected for the assessment task. The Written Assessment will be marked by two independent members of the academic staff. To minimise bias in the marking process, two physiotherapy academic staff, external to the principle supervisor will mark each manuscript.

2 Portfolio

Assessment Title
Portfolio (20%)

Task Description

You will individually prepare, document, and present a Portfolio of research milestones connected with their project. This will outline specific individual tasks (and outcomes) undertaken by you within your research group during the course of study. This will include individual reflection on participation (barriers & facilitators) associated with these tasks. In addition, a SWOT analysis highlighting the strengths, weaknesses (internal), opportunities, and threats (external) of your performance over the Unit is required to be included in the Portfolio. You will need to include self-reflection on how you contributed to your group and ways you could improve for the future.

The Portfolio will be graded by the group's principle academic supervisory team.

As this is a multi-term unit all assessment items are deferred assessments with due dates in Term 2. The Portfolio is due Friday 20th September 2019 at 4:30pm.

3 Oral Examination

Assessment Title
Oral Examination

Task Description

You will present the findings of your research to peers, academic staff and invited guests (e.g. local clinicians) in the form of a conference presentation of approximately 15 minutes duration, excluding question time. This presentation will need to include information related to introduction, methods, results and conclusion from your research study. Your oral presentation may be assessed by the same reviewers of your written assessment and you are expected to discuss any previous feedback provided by them.

As this is a multi-term unit all assessment items are deferred, with due dates in Term 2, 2019. The Oral Examination will occur on Friday 25th October 2019. A timetable will be developed closer to the date.
