Overview
This unit will introduce you to preliminary concepts in statistics. The material covered in this unit will allow you to do research as part of your undergraduate and/or professional career/s. The goal of this unit is to provide you with the skills to perform basic statistical analyses (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square, linear regression, etc.), as they apply in the health, human, and social sciences. It is a recommendation of enrolment in the unit that you have competency at secondary-level mathematics. Students lacking competency at secondary level (including basic algebra) are encouraged to contact the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) to discuss their options before enrolling in this unit.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Unit evaluations and personal email correspondence with students
Students provided positive feedback on the structure and delivery of the lectures. Specifically, they found the 'what, why, how' approach easy to follow. They also said they appreciated the step-by-step explanations and demonstrations of calculation steps for each statistical test.
Continue the practical approach to the theoretical and calculation aspects of the unit.
Feedback from Unit evaluations
Students generally appreciated the iterative assessment schedule of the unit, and noted that this approach helped them to stay on top of the content and focus their learning efforts effectively.

Feedback from Moodle forums and email correspondence
Feedback was given concerning the amount of time given for the Online Quizzes; specifically, they advised that they would appreciate an extra five minutes reading time (i.e., in addition to the 20 minutes) for each quiz.
Include a five-minute reading time for each of the Online Quiz assessment tasks, in order to enable students to familiarise themselves with the questions.

Online quizzes will be open from 09:00 (AEST) on the Wednesday of Weeks 2, 4, 5, and 7.
The ones available in Weeks 2, 4, and 7 will be due one week from opening, i.e., at 09:00 (AEST) on the Wednesdays of Weeks 3, 5, and 8; the one due available in Week 5 will close two weeks from opening, at 09:00 (AEST) on the Wednesday of Week 6 (i.e., Online Quiz # 3 is not due in Vacation Week).
Online tests are comprised of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you will have 25 minutes to answer these.

You will be required to choose and run an appropriate statistical analysis using computer-based software, as well as interpret and report these results in American Psychological Association (APA) format.

Assessments with feedback will be returned approximately two weeks from the due date.
This assessment will be graded out of 10. Marks will be allocated, according to the following criteria:
1. Selection of an appropriate statistical analysis for the given data (2 marks)
2. Justification for the choice of statistical test (2 marks)
3. Results reported and interpreted correctly (4 marks)
4. Results written according to American Psychological Association (APA) standards (2 marks)
