General Information

Overview

This unit provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and practically apply all of the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during their learning journey in the course, particularly with regard to human factors, occupational health, hygiene, safety science and risk management. The unit also develops theoretical and methodological knowledge to allow students to evaluate the evidence that informs their practice. There is a specific emphasis on developing higher order skills and understanding which are representative of the holistic application of core skills that occurs when a professional understands the interaction between disciplinary domains in solving complex problems.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Prerequisites: AINV20006 Safety and Accident Phenomenology, SAFE20017 Human Factors in Complex Systems Prerequisite or co-requisite: SAFE20011 Exposures and Health Risk

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Annotated Bibliography was very lengthy and it only contributed 20% for the overall grade

Recommendation

Review distribution of grades to consider an increase percentage allocated for the Annotated bibliography: note that this is an enabling task for the final literature review.

Assessment Title
Portfolio - Literature Review

Task Description

Select a topic related to the area of Safety Science which you would like to research.

Portfolio 1 - Topic proposal (5%) (due end of Week 3)

Prepare a topic proposal outlining:

1. How studying this topic will enhance your knowledge and practice in this area; and

2. A proposed structure for the review of literature relevant to the topic; and

3. A list of 10 - 15 peer reviewed journal articles that will form the basis of your literature review (in Harvard format).

Portfolio 2 - Annotated bibliography (15%) (due end of Vacation Week)

Prepare an annotated bibliography of the reference material you listed in Portfolio 1 (and any additional relevant material you have included).

Portfolio 3 - Presentation (20%) (at residential school in Week 6)

Present preliminary review findings.

Portfolio 4 - Literature review (30%) (due end of Week 12)

Completed literature review, which should include the following:

1. Background to the topic, including relevance to industry; and

2. Theoretical base/framework of the topic; and

3. Important national and international studies in the area; and

4. Critical analysis of the topic.

Task Description

Students are required to participate in work site visits and undertake risk assessment, human factors and occupational hygiene monitoring activities at the residential school. Results will be submitted in Practicum Reports.
