Overview
This unit covers topics related to occupational health and wellbeing in organisations, emphasising the principles of good work design and the integration of occupational health and safety, health promotion, wellness, work design and productivity. Topics include common occupational health hazards such as manual tasks and sedentary work behaviours, as well as psychosocial hazards such as workplace bullying, occupational violence, shift work and fatigue, which lead to occupational stress.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

There is no required textbook for this unit. All prescribed readings will be provided via the Moodle site.
Students are required to conduct assessments within a deidentified workplace. If you are not currently working within an organisation please contact the unit coordinator for an alternative assessment arrangement.
1 Group Discussion
This task will be completed in the Moodle site in the Assessment 1 Discussion Forum section and does not require you to upload anything for marking. Marking will be completed from your discussion in the Moodle site.
You are required to undertake the following: -
(a) In reference to the Safe Work Australia Report on Work-Related Mental Health Disorders Profile (provided via the Moodle site), you are to present a hypothesis (a supposition made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation) about at least three (3) psychosocial hazards which you think may be present at your workplace. You do not need to identify your workplace.
(b) Discuss how these hazards and their associated risks to workers may manifest and what impact this may have on workplace health, safety and wellbeing.

The following marking criteria will be used, and a marking matrix will be provided in the Moodle site: -
(a) In reference to the Safe Work Australia Report on Work-Related Mental Health Disorders Profile (provided via the Moodle site), you are to hypothesis and discuss at least three (3) psychosocial hazards which you think may be present at your workplace (6%),
(b) Discuss how these hazards and their associated risks to workers may manifest and what impact this may have on workplace health, safety and wellbeing (14%).
- Evaluate the inter-relationships between the workplace, work systems, work environment and people and their impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals
- Apply knowledge of occupational health and wellbeing and psychosocial hazards to the analysis of the design of work and work systems and effectively interpret and communicate findings to organisational stakeholders
2 Case Study
This assessment builds on your assessment 1 and will see you assessing psychosocial risks within a workplace. You are therefore going to use your [deidentified] workplace for the following case study: -
Step 1. Apply the Safe Work Australia Psychosocial Risk Assessment Tool within your workplace,
Step 2. Outline and discuss any psychosocial hazards and associated risks you identified through the use of the tool which may impede workplace health, safety and wellbeing.
Step 3. Review and discuss what existing policies and procedures and/or other systems your workplace currently has in place to prevent and/or manage psychosocial hazards, noting any gaps you perceive in the organisational wide prevention or management systems for psychosocial hazards.
Word limit - no more than 1500 words.
Week 8 Friday (3 May 2024) 11:45 pm AEST
Week 10 Friday (17 May 2024)
The following assessment criteria will be used, and a detailed marking matrix will be provided in the Moodle site.
(a) Application of the Safe Work Australia Psychosocial Risk Assessment Tool to your workplace (6%);
(b) Outline and discuss of any psychosocial hazards and associated risks you identified through the use of the tool which may impede workplace health, safety and wellbeing (12%)
(c) Review and discussion what existing policies and procedures and/or other systems the workplace currently has in place to prevent and/or manage psychosocial hazards, noting any gaps you perceive in the organisational wide prevention or management systems for psychosocial hazards (12%).

- Apply knowledge of occupational health and wellbeing and psychosocial hazards to the analysis of the design of work and work systems and effectively interpret and communicate findings to organisational stakeholders

- Evaluate and recommend appropriate changes in work design to optimise occupational health and wellbeing, improve organisational performance and sustainability, and demonstrate respect for human dignity and diversity through an understanding of the impact of health and psychosocial factors at the workplace.
3 Written Assessment
Your Assessment 3 task is to submit a recorded PowerPoint presentation and an associated written slide deck which covers the following criteria: -
(a) Present your evidence informed findings from the application of the Safe Work Australia Psychosocial Risk Assessment Tool that you did in assessment 2. Evaluate and outline any psychosocial hazards and associated risks you identified which may impede workplace health, safety and wellness in your workplace.
(b) Present your recommendations for the implementation of further workplace changes and any further management strategies based on your findings which are aimed at reducing the psychosocial hazards and enhancing the management of these risks in your workplace.
In your presentation you should include a discussion on the value of good work design and consider actions across the spectrum of prevention, early intervention, and the management of psychological injuries. Your argument for change needs to be persuasive and evidence informed.
Submission - A 10–15-minute recorded presentation (Zoom or other platform) and associated PowerPoint slide deck (up to 20 slides).
As a class cohort there may be an opportunity to share your final presentation with your fellow students, this option will be discussed with the class during the term.

Review/Exam Week Friday (7 June 2024)
The following assessment criteria will be used, and a detailed marking matrix will be provided in the Moodle site.
(a) Present your evidence informed findings from your application of the Safe Work Australia Psychosocial Risk Assessment Tool in assessment 2, for your workplace. Evaluate and outline any psychosocial hazards and associated risks you identified which may impede workplace health, safety and wellness (15%),
(b) Then present recommendations for the implementation of further workplace changes and any further management strategies based on your findings which are aimed at reducing the psychosocial hazards and associated risks in your workplace. Your recommendations should include a discussion on the value of good work design and consider actions across the spectrum of prevention, early intervention, and the management of psychological injuries. Your argument for change needs to be persuasive and evidence informed (35%).
