General Information

Overview

This unit provides you with an overview of the interface between the ethical principles and legal imperatives informing social work practice in Australia. You will explore the values and principles upon which social work ethics and human service law are based. Further, you will examine the challenges to ethical decision-making practitioners can expect to encounter in multiple practice settings, where you will deal with situations, competing rights and responsibilities, and involuntary participants in intervention. With a view to developing your own robust ethical framework for future practice, you will be encouraged to reflect critically on your personal values and attitudes and consider how they might impact on your work with clients and stakeholders whose life-experience, views and values differ from your own. Students will be undertaking their first fieldwork placement, or, alternatively be a part-time student who is working as well doing this unit. This will enable students to reflect on their practice within a human service agency.
