Overview
In this unit, you will develop foundational skills in statistical reasoning and data analysis. You will learn how to describe and explore data using summary statistics such as the mean, variance, and standard deviation, and how probability theory can be used to model uncertainty and estimate the likelihood of events. You will examine common probability distributions and learn how to use their properties to calculate probabilities and interpret statistical situations. The unit introduces key ideas from sampling theory and statistical inference, enabling you to draw conclusions about populations based on sample data. You will apply techniques such as confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to investigate research questions and evaluate statistical evidence. Throughout the unit, you will use statistical software and computational tools to perform calculations, analyse datasets, and visualise results. By the end of the unit, you will be able to apply introductory statistical methods to analyse real data, interpret statistical output, and communicate conclusions clearly in practical contexts.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
