Overview
The world continues to change rapidly in ways that affect well-being, social and economic development and the natural environment. In this unit, you will explore the causes, patterns, trends and localised impacts of major global changes, including population growth, migration, urbanisation, globalisation, socio-economic inequality and environmental change. You will investigate linkages between these changes and sustainability and adapt your thinking to new contexts in a changing world.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Online discussion forum
The assessment task asks you to participate in the ONLINE DISCUSSION (assessment) in the unit's Moodle site. You should create at least 3 initial posts and 2 response posts. Your initial posts should be substantive, and response posts should be meaningful and advance the discussion of the initial posts. The length of each initial post should be 50–70 words.

Posts should be created during the period from week 1 to week 12. Posts submitted after week 12 (11:30pm, Sunday) will not be assessed.
All posts will be evaluated by the end of the term.

2 Portfolio
This assessment consists of 3 projects.
PROJECT 1 is to choose a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and write a reflective essay discussing how the SDG affects or is relevant to your ‘business’ (discipline of your study, your industry or future profession etc.). The essay should be about 700 words in length and is due on Friday, Week 5.
PROJECT 2 is to choose one of the global changes discussed in weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8 and write a reflective essay discussing how your community is affected by this change. The essay should be about 700 words in length and is due on Friday, Week 8.
PROJECT 3 is to choose one of the global changes discussed in weeks 9, 10 and 11 and write a reflective essay discussing how the sustainability of your local area is affected by or relevant to the global change. The essay should be about 700 words in length and is due on Friday, Week 11.

The 3 projects are due Friday in week 5, 8 and 11 respectively
Projects will be marked and returned in two weeks after the due date respectively.
Your projects will be assessed based on the overall quality of description, analysis and reflection, including:
- quality of introduction and account of the ‘issue’
- quality of analysis and critical reflection on the ‘issue’, and the learning involved
- critical reflection for self-improvement and future practice

3 Written Assessment
The task of this assessment is to write a term research paper about a global change or aspects of the global change. The length of the paper should be around 2,500 substantive words. The topic can be any social, economic or environmental change – Making a good choice by yourself is part of the assignment.
In the paper, you should demonstrate both understanding of the change and ability to analyse and debate it. These include
- defining the change and discussing its significance
- describing trends and patterns of the change
- analysing causes/drivers of the change
- discussing impacts of the change
- evaluating impacts of the change on sustainability

The term paper assessment will be based on:
